Bettina Pelz

Bettina Pelz (* 1963 in Ennigerloh ) is an internationally active German curator with a focus on light in art, design and architecture.

biography

Pelz grew up in Ennigerloh in the Münsterland . After graduating from the Thomas Morus Gymnasium in Oelde , she studied at the University of Muenster philosophy and at the Münster University of Applied Sciences Social. After completing her studies, in 1989 she took over the artistic direction of the cultural program of the socio-cultural center shoe factory in Ahlen . From 1993 to 1996 she headed the cultural department of the socio-cultural center Werkhof in Hagen - Hohenlimburg . Since 1996 she has been working as a freelance curator , since 2000 with a focus on light in art, design and architecture. As such, she is involved in a variety of interdisciplinary projects, including in Denmark, Estonia, France, Holland, Italy, Croatia, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Serbia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA.

Pelz lives in Wetter (Ruhr) together with the American musician Bradford Catler.

Teaching

From 2014 to 2017 she held a visiting professorship at the Saar College of Fine Arts . Together with Daniel Hausig , she founded the LIFAcolloquium, a cross-university network on light in the visual arts. This network regularly realizes conferences on various key topics: 2017 at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences : The colors of light art, 2016 at the University of Applied Arts Vienna : Light art and architecture. Together with Daniel Hausig and Michael Schwarz , she founded the LIFAresearch project in 2015, a data collection on light in the visual arts for research and teaching.

Since 2004 she has been teaching at the Bremen University of the Arts in the field of professionalization in the courses of fine arts, integrated design and digital media. From 2009 to 2010 she built the founding laboratory. Since 2012 she has headed the master's studio Material and Technology - Innovation Processes in Product Design together with Andreas Kramer.

From 2005 to 2011 she taught in various sub-areas of professional practice in the cultural-shaping disciplines at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg as part of the post-graduate courses "ProKultur" and "Edukult³" in the center for academic further education "C3L".

From 2008 to 2011 she taught contemporary curatorial practice at the University of Hildesheim in the “Center for Lifelong Learning”.

Exhibition projects

Light routes in Lüdenscheid

Together with Tom Groll, she is the founding curator of Lichtrouten Lüdenscheid . She curated the editions 2002 (Title: black boxes ), 2003 (title: Unorte ), 2004 (title light habitats ), 2005 (title: parklands ), 2006 (title: Architecture of Memory ), 2010 (title: curiosities of light ) and 2013 (Title: The Art of Projection ).

Glow in Eindhoven

Together with Tom Groll she is the founding curator of the Glow Festival - International Forum for Light in Art and Architecture in Eindhoven . She curated the editions 2006 (Title: Green Light ), 2007 (Title: Sealed Spaces), 2008 (Title: The Forbidden City ) and 2009 (Title: Being Public ).

Narracje in Gdansk

She is the founding curator of the exhibition format Narracje - Interventions for Public Spaces in Gdansk . She curated the editions in 2009 (title: Open Spaces ), 2010 (title: Lost and Found ) and 2011 (title: Nature of the City ).

Color festival at the Bauhaus Dessau

She curated the 2011 edition and developed the concept Instead of Color: Light in Dessau .

Streams of light in Koblenz

Together with Tom Groll, she is the founding curator of the Lichtströmme festival in Koblenz . She curated the 2011 editions (title: Von Blaue Blumen ) and 2012 (title: Kunstformen der Natur ).

Switch on Beijing

In 2013 she is co-curator of the Switch on Beijing festival together with Karen Chan and Tewa Srilaklang.

Glades in Hildesheim

She is the founding curator of the International Light Art Biennale Hildesheim 2015. She also curated the second edition 2018 under the title "Evi Lichtungen" on the subject of "The Light Metaphor".

Interference in Tunis

Together with Aymen Gharbi, she founded the international light-art project "Interference" in 2016 in Tunis . All exhibition locations were in the Medina of Tunis, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 .

Lake Djerba in Houmt Souk

Together with Aymen Gharbi, she founded the international light art project "See Djerba" in 2017 in Djerba .

Responsive in Halifax

Together with Ralf Seippel she founded the international light-art project "Responsive" in 2017 in Halifax . The exhibition venues were the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Art Gallery of the Dalhousie University and the Anna Leonowens Gallery of NSCAD University .
