The district museum Dachau shows around 2000 objects on the cultural history and folklore of the Upper Bavarian city of Dachau and its surrounding area. Subject areas are the history of the town and district of Dachau , handicrafts, bourgeois lifestyle, rural living, Dachau costume, popular piety and superstition .

History of the museum

The extensive holdings of the Dachau District Museum can essentially be traced back to the collection on the cultural history of the Dachau District Office , which was held by the Dachau Museum Association e. V. were collected. The association founded in 1903 by the artists Hans von Hayek , Hermann Stockmann and August Pfaltz had set itself the goal of setting up a museum, which was opened in Dachau Castle as early as 1905 . After the collection was put into storage in 1958, there was initially no exhibition. At the beginning of the 1970s, the museum association did one more development work: the collection was cataloged and significantly expanded. The district museum was able to reopen in 1987 in cooperation with the association of Dachau galleries and museums jointly founded in 1981 by the city and district of Dachau.

It has since been housed in the former electoral caste office of the Dachau district court, a historic building from the late 18th century opposite the parish church. The museum management has been in the hands of the special purpose association Dachau Galleries and Museums since 1988. In 1993 the museum was awarded the Bavarian Museum Prize. The house underwent a renovation in 2005 and the presentation was partially redesigned.

collection

One of the special exhibits of the history of the city and district of Dachau has been a large model of the former Dachau market from around 1700 since 2005. Stereo photographs from around 1900 and a herbarium from the 1920s give an impression of the appearance of the market and the disappeared Dachau moss .

In addition to various professions, the handicraft department presents evidence of the guild system and an extensive collection of wooden models by local gingerbread makers from the 18th and 19th centuries. A spectacular object is the viola by Dachau violin maker Johann Caspar Stadler from 1702. (A precious viola d'amore , which Stadler created for the Bavarian Elector Max Emanuel , is in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg). Musical instruments from the Dachau Landwehr band from the first half of the 19th century, the bibliophile editions of the Einhorn Verlag, founded in 1906, citizen portraits and handicrafts illustrate the culture of the Dachau bourgeoisie. This also includes a house crib for the “nativity pope” Theodor Gämmeler.

One focus of the museum is the representation of the rural living conditions of the 18th and 19th centuries with the staging of a rural living room and bedroom. Special exhibits are a splendid "chamber carriage" from around 1900, which transports a bride's trousseau, and a replica of a house facade typical of the Dachau region. August Pfaltz created a model of a typical farmhouse from the Dachau region for the museum in 1906.

A separate section is dedicated to the Dachau costume , made famous by the pictures of the Dachau artists' colony . Of particular importance is the exceptionally complete collection of objects and documents on popular piety and superstition , which includes over 300 amulets and talismans .

In addition to the permanent exhibition, special exhibitions on cultural-historical topics are regularly shown.
