The first sign of self-government by the residents dates back to 1520 with the mention of a mayor. During the Second Partition of Poland , the city became part of Prussia . In 1807 the city became part of the Duchy of Warsaw and eight years later part of Congress Poland . The town's heyday was in the 18th century. During the January Uprising of 1863, minor skirmishes took place near the city. In 1870, the city Bieżuń lost its city charter . In 1939 the Wehrmacht marched in . The place in Powiat Sierpc became part of the German district of Sichelberg and was temporarily renamed Lauffen . In 1945 the Red Army marched in . Bieżuń only regained its town charter in 1994.
