Big Walnut Creek in Three Creeks Metro Park near Columbus |
The Big Walnut Creek is a left tributary of the Scioto River in the central US state of Ohio . It rises about 2 km southwest of Mount Gilead in Morrow County . It then flows south parallel to Alum Creek and is dammed east of Sunbury to the Hoover Reservoir in Blendon Township. The Hoover Memorial Reservoir is an important water reservoir for the city of Columbus and contains around 80 billion liters of water. The lake has a surface of about 13.25 km². The dam was built in 1955 and reaches a height of 29 m and a length of 787 m. Big Walnut Creek continues to flow south through the towns of Gahanna and Whitehall and reaches Three Creeks Columbus Metro Park , where it receives its two main tributaries, Alum Creek and Blacklick Creek . On the county border of Franklin and Pickaway Counties near Lockbourne , it flows into the Scioto River.
Big Walnut Creek is not to be confused with the smaller Walnut Creek , which flows into the Scioto River a little further south.
