Bilanz (spelling: BILANZ ) was a German business magazine that was published from May 2014 by Bilanz Deutschland Wirtschaftsmagazin GmbH, a subsidiary of Axel Springer SE . It appeared ten times a year in retail stores and as a supplement to the subscription circulation of the newspapers Die Welt and Die Welt Kompakt . The circulation in 2019 was 110,000 copies, of which 70,000 copies went to world subscribers. In September 2019, Axel Springer SE announced that the title would not be continued as an independent business magazine. Instead, it is planned to integrate the newspaper into the daily newspaper Die Welt . The last issue was published on November 2, 2019.

editorial staff

From February 2014, the editor-in-chief of the Bilanz was the business journalist Klaus Boldt. Before moving to Springer, Boldt had worked as a foreign correspondent for Manager Magazin in New York for twelve years . The publisher of Bilanz , Arno Balzer , previously held a leading position at Manager Magazin , most recently as editor-in-chief for over ten years. In December 2018, Balzer announced his resignation as editor for the summer of 2019.

Opinion and debate forum Bilanz.de

In November 2015, Bilanz redesigned its online presence: the website was given a new design and, at the same time, Bilanz launched an opinion and debate forum for the German economy based on the Forbes model on its website . Around 90 columnists write articles on current topics and controversial issues.

German AI Award / German AI Award

The magazine awarded in the spring of 2019 the first German AI Price / German AI Award for outstanding contributions to the research and development and the application and commercialization of artificial intelligence . The prize was awarded in three categories. An international jury made up of renowned representatives from research and application decided on the award. The main prize was awarded to the computer science professor Kristian Kersting from the Technical University of Darmstadt . The undoped honorary award went to the translation service DeepL . Professor Elmar Rückert from the University of Lübeck received the young talent award . The award ceremony for the first German AI Prize took place with guests from research, business, politics, media, and art and culture. BALANCE SHEET accompanied the first German AI price thematically with reports and analyzes in the magazine and in the BALANCE channel on WELT.de . Gründerwettbewerb Start me up!

Under the slogan “An initiative for more entrepreneurial spirit”, the Bilanz editorial team launched the start-up competition Start me up! out. With prize money of 100,000 euros, it is one of the most highly endowed German start-up competitions. In cooperation with five partners - the insurance group Hanse Merkur , Deutsche Bank , Daimler , the Maschmeyer Group and ProSiebenSat1 - the editorial team is looking for the founders of tomorrow. The competition has been held annually since then.

In addition to the prize money, the winner can look forward to one-time coaching with the start-up star Peter Thiel , as well as accompanying reporting in the balance sheet and on Bilanz.de. The start-up Artiminds Robotics from Karlsruhe won the award in 2016. In 2017, the start-up DiaMonTech, a spin-off from the Goethe University Frankfurt , which is working on the development of a non-invasive method for determining blood sugar levels , won.

The application deadline for the third round of the start-up competition ended on March 31, 2018. A jury decided on the winner. The award ceremony took place in June 2018.

The 500 richest Germans

A list of the 500 richest Germans has appeared on the balance sheet since 2014 . The business magazine creates the list based on its own research and updates it annually. In September 2016, Bilanz published the 750 richest Germans, and in September 2017 the list contained the names of the 1000 richest Germans for the first time. With this number, the journal's richest list is the most extensive in Germany.

Awards

In December 2014, the Bilanz editorial team was named “Business Editor of the Year 2014” by the trade journal Wirtschaftsjournalist . Shortly afterwards, Medium Magazin named Klaus Boldt the second best business journalist of the year. In May 2015, the international INMA award for “Best New Print Product” followed. In October 2015, the balance sheet also won the Lead Award , the “Oscar of the German newspaper and magazine industry”, for the second best “Newcomer Magazine of the Year”.
