history

Foundation of the pumice factory and conversion of an old mill

The pumice stone factory was founded in 1884. It was originally an oil mill to which a sawmill was connected.

In 1897 Hermann Volk built a kiln in the oil mill to produce pumice stones , which he converted into a sand mill . As a result, Volk built a large kiln with a total of three kilns and large drying rooms as well as a residential building with an administration building . An existing horse stable with barn and shed were renewed by the people next to it. The last horses were used until 1950. The old water wheel was replaced by a turbine by Volk .

The rise and fall of the pumice factory

The white quartz sand required for the pumice stone production was delivered by railroad car from the Jagst valley to Gamburg train station . The kaolin that was also required was also delivered by rail from the Upper Palatinate. When the freight traffic at Gamburg railway station ceased, the material was delivered to the plant by general cargo truck from Heilbronn.

The pumice stones from Gamburg, also known as the “Gamburger Mäuschen”, achieved fame beyond Germany. They were used in particular as hygiene articles against calluses or dirty hands. In its heyday, the pumice stone factory advertised in ten languages. Other products of the pumice stone factory were large pumice stones for grinding and polishing for the metalworking industry, erasers for the graphic industry, pumice stone powder as a cleaning and abrasive agent and as a raw material for whiting products .

The management of the factory was recently in Heilbronn . In 2002 the factory, which had been in operation by the Volk family without interruption since 1857, had to close.

The houses of the former pumice stone factory, which are still inhabited, are no longer run as an independent living space and are considered to have merged in the neighboring town. All technical devices have now been removed and some buildings and parts of the building torn down. The house is the only inhabited building on the site.

The living space came to the municipality of Werbach on January 1, 1975 as part of the formerly independent municipality of Gamburg.
