Birgit Pohl (born April 22, 1954 in Lichtenau (Neustadt an der Orla) ) is a German former athlete and swimmer .

Life

After graduating from high school , she matriculated to study mathematics in the Soviet city ​​of Kharkiv . She is also a graduate economist. She then worked for a bank in Gera .

In 1982 Pohl suffered a stroke and at the beginning of the 1990s she started doing sports for the disabled - before that she had been an ambitious swimmer. Impaired by flaccid paralysis in both legs and partial paralysis of the left arm, she now competed in a sitting position in the javelin throw , the discus throw and the shot put and was finally assigned to the starting class F 34 . Her greatest successes are two gold medals at the 1996 Summer Paralympic Games in Atlanta and 2000 in Sydney, as well as several titles at the World Athletics Championships for the disabled . In the run-up to the 2008 Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing, she fell ill with cancer , but after a successful recovery she still managed to qualify and won a silver and a bronze medal in the competitions. Apart from her international successes, Pohl is also a multiple German champion in her athletic disciplines as well as in swimming. In January 2012 she retired from active competitive sports.
