Birgitt Riegraf (* 1. January 1961 in Remseck am Neckar , also Birgit Riegraf ) is a German sociologist , specializing in the fields of science and university research , gender studies and their methods and methodology , inequality and intersectionality and heads of state , labor and organizational sociology . She has been President of the University of Paderborn since April 2018 .

Life and work

Birgitt Riegraf studied political science , sociology , psychology , religious studies and the interdisciplinary supplementary course Qualitative Methods in Social Sciences at the Free University of Berlin . After graduation she was u. a. works as a research assistant at the Berlin Science Center for social research and is a PhD scholarship holder of the equal opportunities funding program of the Berlin Senate Department for Labor and Women and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation . In 1995, she was at the Free University of Berlin in the Department of Political Science on Workplace equality policies as an object of political negotiations in micro enterprises doctorate . The doctoral thesis was published in 1996 under the title Gender and Micropolitics. The example of company equality published in VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften . Following his doctorate, Riegraf held various positions at Bielefeld University. There she completed her habilitation in 2004 at the Faculty of Sociology on the subject of new public management and gender relations. An analysis of the qualitative change in the state . In 2009 she was appointed to the chair for general sociology at the University of Paderborn. From 2010 to 2015 she was the Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Cultural Studies there ; from 2015 to 2018 Vice President for Studies, Teaching and Quality Management. Since April 2018 she has been the first female president of the University of Paderborn. In this role, she advocates more interdisciplinary research , a stronger internationalization of the university's research activities, but also an even better regional network. Another central concern is the visibility of the research results developed at the university beyond the boundaries of the scientific community in order to better convey the importance of scientific findings for society.

Riegraf is a member of the board of directors of the North Rhine-Westphalia Research College Light - Efficient - Mobile and the Digital University of North Rhine-Westphalia. She is also a member of the editorial team of Feminist Studies and co-editor of the series Arbeitsgesellschaft im Wandel (together with Brigitte Aulenbacher ) as well as Gender and Society (together with Beate Kortendiek, Katja Sabisch, Ilse Lenz , Helma Lutz , Michiko Mae, Michael Meuser , Ursula Müller, Mechtild Oechsle and Susanne Völker). She is active in various commissions as an expert and consultant, including as a member of the advisory board of the German-Chinese Ecopark in Qingdao and the independent scientific commission of Lower Saxony. She has been the Friedrich Ebert Foundation's liaison lecturer since 2014.

Riegraf is currently dealing with questions about the change in the science system and university organization, the restructuring of the public sector and the topic of care and care work (as of February 2019).
