Bisacodyl is a drug from the group of laxatives for the treatment of constipation , especially those caused by neurological factors. Bisacodyl is a triphenylmethane - derivative and was first in 1953 because of its structural similarity to phenolphthalein as laxatives used. For a long time it was only sold under the name Dulcolax ® and is now also available as a generic in pharmacies.
application
Bisacodyl is available as coated tablets or suppositories . As a suppository the effect occurs after 15 to 30 minutes, as a dragee after 6 to 12 hours.
Mode of action
As a suppository, it only works in the rectum , while when taken orally it first reaches the colon via the enterohepatic circulation , where it is converted into diphenols by bacteria. The reaction products lead to increased motility of the intestine and have the effect that less water can be withdrawn from the intestinal contents due to the faster transport. The later onset of action and the longer-lasting effect of oral administration explain the detour via the liver. The exact mechanism of action when used as a suppository (suppository) is still unclear.
Side effects
When used in suppository form, local irritation symptoms may occur. Electrolyte shifts in the serum could not be observed even after decades of use. The frequently mentioned habituation also occurs very rarely in reality, even with long-term use. Proven side effects can be cramp-like abdominal pain due to the motor effect. A transfer into breast milk takes place only minimally and has no effect on the breastfed child.
