The Bischofferoder Tunnel (also known as the Eisberg Tunnel ) is a disused railway tunnel in northeastern Hesse ( Germany ) located on the Kanonenbahn .

geography

The Bischofferoder Tunnel is located on the border of the districts of Schwalm-Eder in the west and Werra-Meißner in the east in the northernmost foothills of the densely wooded Stölzinger Mountains between Spangenberg - Bischofferode and Waldkappel - Chemmern.

The tunnel passes just under the site through the elongated Stölzinger height where the French Street (portion of the trail "F 08"), the national road  crosses 3227th It was erected only about 700 m south of the Petershöhe ( 441  m above sea level ) and 2.25 km (as the crow flies ) south of the iceberg adjoining this mountain in the north, at about 340  m above sea level .

The tunnel can be reached via Landesstraße  3227, which leads from Bischofferode over the ridge through which the tunnel runs to Hetzerode and connects the B 7 in the east with the B 487 in the west.

Tunnel description

According to the inscription on the crenellated west portal east of Bischofferode, the tunnel was built in 1878; this probably means "until '78". According to various statements, it is 1,503 and 1,508 m long.

The Bischofferoder Tunnel , designed for double-track rail traffic , through which only one track ultimately led, is located on the 40.41 km long Niederhone - Malsfeld cannon railway section , a strategic railway line between Berlin and Metz , on which goods (especially military goods ) and people were transported . With regard to the tunnel, this officially took place from May 15, 1879 to May 26, 1974, when the Waldkappel – Malsfeld section was closed.

Since probably the beginning of the 1980s - old photos suggest this - the portals of the tunnel have been walled up except for a small entry and exit opening for bats , with a double-leaf door each being integrated. In December 2003, the crumbling doors of both portals were replaced by wide-meshed metal grilles. The portals, which were built from natural stone, are each around 340  m high. Because the tunnel rises slightly towards the middle and is slightly curved, you cannot look from one end to the other.

The overburden that was created not only from the construction of the tunnel and the tunnel incisions was poured onto “Die Kippe”, which now has a football and children's playground . Due to its obviously good building structure, the tunnel has only seen slight water ingress to this day.

Economic history

The establishment of the Bisch Offer or tunnels , some bridges and embankments of dams , laying of tracks, the construction of railway stations , bus stops and service buildings , such as the signalman's house , the m almost 500 stands in front of the west portal and now a residential house is led in the short term to economic Upswing in the then very economically weak Hessian region.
