history

The diocese of Guanhães was established on May 24, 1985 by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Recte quidem from cessions of territory from the archdiocese of Diamantina and the dioceses of Governador Valadares and Itabira-Fabriciano . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Diamantina as a suffragan .
