history

The diocese of Kroonstad was on November 26, 1923 by Pope Pius XI. Established from the cession of territory by the Vicariate Apostolic Kimberley in South Africa as the Apostolic Prefecture of Kroonstad . On April 8, 1935, the Apostolic Prefecture Kroonstad was by Pius XI. raised to the apostolic vicariate . The Apostolic Vicariate Kroonstad gave on February 12, 1948 parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Vicariate Bethlehem .

The Apostolic Vicariate Kroonstad was on January 11, 1951 by Pope Pius XII. raised to the diocese and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Bloemfontein as a suffragan .
