The Roman Catholic Diocese of Porto-Novo (Latin Dioecesis Portus Novi , French Diocèse de Porto-Novo ) is an in Benin located diocese of the Roman Catholic Church , based in Porto-Novo . The almost 714,000 Catholics make up about 40% of the population.

history

The diocese of Porto Novo was founded on April 5, 1954 by Pope Pius XII. Established with the Apostolic Constitution Qui universum from cessions of territory of the Apostolic Vicariate Ouidah as Apostolic Vicariate Porto-Novo . On September 14, 1955, the Apostolic Vicariate Porto-Novo was by Pius XII. raised to a diocese with the Apostolic Constitution Dum tantis and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Cotonou as a suffragan . The Diocese of Porto Novo gave up on April 5, 1963 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Abomey .
