The Diocese of Victoria ( Latin Dioecesis Victoriensis in Insula Vancouver ) is a in Canada situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Victoria .

history

The diocese of Victoria was on July 24, 1846 by Pope Pius IX. established from cession of territory by the Vicariate Apostolic Oregon Territory as the diocese of Vancouver Island . On December 14, 1863, the diocese gave parts of its territory to found the Vicariate Apostolic British Columbia . Another assignment took place on July 27, 1894 to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Alaska .

The diocese of Vancouver Island was on June 19, 1903 by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the archbishopric. This archbishopric was renamed Archdiocese of Victoria on September 6, 1904 and was demoted to diocese on October 1, 1908 by Pope Pius X.

The Diocese of Victoria is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Vancouver as a suffragan .
