Bitch is an American metal band from Los Angeles . At the beginning she anticipated the beginnings of speed metal and made use of an S / M image that can be seen as a forerunner of similar bands like Plasmatics and The Great Kat and opened doors for bands like L7 and Babes in Toyland .

Band history

Betsy Weiss moved from New Jersey to Los Angeles in her youth . After a short interlude with a Ska band, she founded the group Bitch together with David Carruth (guitar), Mark Anthony Webb (bass) and Robby Settles (drums). From then on she called herself "Betsy Bitch". In order to attract attention in the Los Angeler club scene, the group gave itself an S / M image that optically worked with leather, riveted bracelets and whips.

After Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records attended a live concert by Bitch and heard the demo Live for the Whip , he decided to sign the group. 1982 Bitch was therefore on the first Metal Massacre - Sampler represented on the well Metallica debuted. Shortly afterwards the EP Damnation Alley was released , which was only inadequately described with Motörhead , Alice Cooper and the singing style with Pat Benatar . The hard Speed Metal style of the early years was too new . It was the second release of the Metal Blade label after the sampler. In 1983 the debut album Be My Slave was released . Both albums were strongly based on the S / M image in terms of cover artwork and lyrics.

Their management tried to transform the group into a, commercially speaking, more appealing band and it was some time before the musicians were able to break the contract. In 1987 the second album was released under the title The Bitch Is Back , which showed the group from another side. Much more melodious and with an almost complete abandonment of its old image. Rather, the group now played catchy Power Metal with lyrics that corresponded to common metal clichés. The title track was also an Elton John - cover . Despite the long break, the line-up was constant, only Mark Anthony Webb had left the group in favor of Ron Cordy. In the same year Weiss also sang a duet with Lizzy Borden on the album Terror Rising .

Then Bitch renamed himself "Betsy" and played commercial glam metal , but the album of the same name from 1988 was unsuccessful. Eventually the group renamed themselves again to Bitch and released the 1989 compilation A Rose by Any Other Name with unreleased songs. In 1990 the band broke up.

In 2003 the group played at Bang Your Head in Balingen .

controversy

The group came into the public eye as part of Tipper Gore's PMRC campaign , which regularly showed the first two albums on US television. In contrast to other artists such as 2 Live Crew and Ice-T , the PMRC campaign made the then relatively unknown group known nationwide.
