The Bjarni Sæmundsson is a research vessel of the Hafrannsóknastofnun Ísland .
General
The ship was built under construction number 473 at the SSW Schichau-Seebeck shipyard in Bremerhaven . The keel was laid on December 3, 1969, the launch on April 27, 1970. The ship was completed in December 1970.
The ship is named after the Icelandic scientist Bjarni Sæmundsson.
Technical data and equipment
The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . Three Deutz diesel engines (type: TBD 616 V12) are available for power generation. A diesel generator with a MAN diesel engine (type: D 1246 M) was installed as an emergency power and harbor generator. Propulsion is carried out by two coupled electric motors that act on a fixed propeller . The ship is equipped with a bow thruster .
The superstructures are located in the middle of the ship. Behind the deck extensions is a large open deck with a Heckaufschleppe . The ship is equipped for fisheries research and various marine research. It has several sonar and echo sounder systems . It is equipped with various winches for fishing research and for towing research equipment, including two large drums for nets or cables. There are three cranes on board as lifting tools.
There are 20 cabins on board, twelve single and eight double cabins. In normal operation there are 13 crew members and up to 13 scientists on board. Other rooms include the galley and galley , a mess and lounge, fitness room and various storage rooms. For fisheries research, the ship is equipped with two wet laboratories, a dry laboratory and a laboratory room for the evaluation of sonar data. There is a hold in the aft area .
