Baron Blasius Columban von Bender , also Blasius Columban von Bender and Johann Blasius von Bender (born November 14, 1713 in Gengenbach , Baden, † November 20, 1798 ) was a German officer who worked in the wars of the 18th century for over 60 years stood in Austrian service and rose to field marshal .

Life

Joined the imperial army in 1733, Bender served as a young man under Prince Eugene against the Turks. In the following years he took part in the Silesian, Dutch and Seven Years War and was seriously wounded several times. In 1758 he became a colonel, in 1769 a major general and in 1775 a field marshal lieutenant . In 1782 he was raised to the baron status for his services. As Feldzeugmeister , he became the commandant of Luxembourg in 1785 . With this position he played an important role when the Belgian uprising broke out in 1789. While the whole country was in turmoil and had to be evacuated, he was able to stay in Luxembourg and from there began the repossession of the country. At the end of November 1790 he advanced from there with 30,000 men to Brussels , which he was able to take on December 3rd. In a few weeks the whole of Belgium was subjugated and Duke Albrecht von Sachsen-Teschen was able to return as governor. Bender was awarded the Grand Cross of the Maria Theresa Order for his performance . In the following Revolutionary Wars he completed his remarkable military career at the age of 82 by defending Luxembourg against the French for eight months until the surrender on June 7, 1795. He had participated in 12 major battles and 6 sieges in 29 campaigns.
