Blazers were built by the shipyards in Hindeloopen , Makkum and Warkum . It has similarities with the fishing boat types botter and schokker .

The bulky bulbous bow and the stern of a blazer are rounded, the stem is bent, the straight stern. The forecastle is covered up to the mast , a bulwark extends the hull upwards. A gaff sail is driven on the mast ; jib and jib are set as headsails . The blazer has a tiller control . The long and narrow running side boards designed to limit lateral drifting away or avoid. When empty, a blazer has a very shallow draft of around half a meter.

Blazers were built in different dimensions. Depending on the length, it is equipped with one or two masts, with single masts being the rule. Blazers from Wieringen in North Holland (ship identification WR), for example, were about 11 meters long, while those from the island of Texel (ship identification TX) were a little longer at around 14 meters. Both variants have a mast each. In contrast, the blazers from Paesens and Moddergat are even longer and some of them have two masts.

In front of the mast, a blazer below deck has a low cabin for the crew. Behind the mast it is open to the stern. Midships runs a recess ( Bünn or fish box), from which the team can take their catch.

The sideline of the blazer gradually descends from the foredeck over midships to the aft and rises slightly just before the narrower, rounded stern. The rudder stock or boom is almost vertical. Compared to the more delicate-looking botter, the blazer on the foredeck has a wider, higher and stronger bulwark that characterizes this type of ship, making it appear significantly heavier and stronger.

The frames (crossbars) in the foredeck are convex in shape, in the stern they have an S-shape.

Areas of application

This type of ship is particularly suitable for coastal waters of the North Sea, the northern Zuiderzee ( IJsselmeer ) and the Wadden Sea . Blazers were mainly used in the northern seas around the West Frisian Islands, but were also found on the rivers of Zealand . At low tide, thanks to its flat bottom, the ship was able to rest on the dry mud flats without tilting .

The blazer was mainly used for commercial fishing , for shrimp , cod , mussels , plaice , hake .
