Bob Kuhn

Robert "Bob" Frederick Kuhn (born January 28, 1920 in Buffalo , New York , † October 1, 2007 in Tucson , Arizona ) was an American painter , illustrator and sculptor whose subjects were predominantly wild animals from the American and African continents . He only signed with his family name.

Life

Bob Kuhn was the son of Edward G. (1886–1965) and Marie Wilhelmina Kuhn, née Trapp (1894–1992). He had two brothers and a sister.

Kuhn grew up in Buffalo and, as a child, painted animals that he observed in the Buffalo Zoo . From 1937 he studied at the Pratt Institute in New York City . There he also met his wife Elizabeth "Libby" Jane Casey († 2015). The wedding took place in 1941. For 50 years they lived in Roxbury in Litchfield County of Connecticut , where the three children were growing up. In 1996 he moved to Tucson , Arizona with Libby .

Bob Kuhn died of heart failure at the age of 87.

Act

During World War II , he served in the US Merchant Marine . There he started doing sports illustrations on board a ship. For 30 years he worked as one of the most important American wildlife illustrators. In 1970 he then concentrated exclusively on easel painting . In addition, some animal sculptures were created .

His illustrations have appeared in numerous publications. Works are in well-known collections, for example in the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole , Wyoming . Many of his paintings are traded in the five to six digit US dollar range. At a Coeur d'Alene Art Auction, his painting The Spawning Run (1991) achieved a top bid of nearly $ 500,000. In 1991 Kuhn won the “Prix de West” of the National Academy of Western Art, National Cowboy Hall of Fame , Oklahoma City, with his painting Lair of the Cat .

Kuhn was a member of the New York Society of Animal Artists (SAA) and was part of the original seven-member artist group Tucson 7 .
