Life

Brown grew up in Moose Jaw and came to painting through his father as a child, as his father was a passionate hobby painter. After graduating from high school , Brown did window displays. He attended the Alberta College of Art in Calgary , then went to England and attended the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts at the University of the Arts London .

He told Allison Carlton of True West Magazine in 2012 that he had been kicked out of art school but that it didn't stop him from pursuing his goal of making a living from art. He found his adopted home in Tucson and lives there with his wife Carol. His nephew Scot Paisley from Alberta is also a successful portrait painter.

Act

Brown is particularly known for his portraits of North American Indians and members of the so-called First Nations . Back in his homeland in the 1950s, inspired by a group of North American Indians living on his street, he found enthusiasm for their interesting facial features with the pronounced cheekbones and the sometimes extremely dramatic faces of some older Indians as an artistic motif due to the noses and lips. In addition to cowboy and Indian portraits, he portrays personalities from politics and the entertainment industry, for example Christopher Lee in his role as Dracula , a commissioned work for a film magazine. His interest in portraits of politicians came about through a commissioned work for a portrait of the British politician Winston Churchill .

In 1973 he had his first noteworthy solo exhibition at the Montana Historical Society in Helena . In 1979 he was a founding member of the artists' association Northwest Rendezvous (NWR) and belongs to the original seven-member artist group Tucson 7 . He is a regular participant in the "Prix de West" annual exhibitions of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City . His work has been exhibited in well-known galleries in the United States.

Brown traveled through America, Europe, Asian, Australia, especially to mention Russia and Mexico, and from 1980 to 1999 gave painting courses worldwide. He teaches at Scottsdale Artists' School, Scottsdale , where he has established a scholarship fund for high school students.

At a Coeur d'Alene Art Auction in 2008 scored his portrait of the tribal chief and medicine man Sitting Bull is a top bid of 30,000 dollars , which was twice as high as the original estimate. His painting Cooling Off the Hard Way raised a bid for $ 305,000 at the 2003 Santa Fe Art Auction.
