The SBB RABDe 502 for the InterCity and the SBB RABe 502 for the InterRegio traffic are double-decker multiple units for long-distance traffic of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) from the manufacturer Bombardier Transportation .

The trains known as FV-Dosto (SBB), TWINDEXX Express (Bombardier) or TWINDEXX Swiss Express are based on the Bombardier Twindexx platform, which also includes the Twindexx Vario . The first trains should have been delivered from 2013. After a delay of more than four years, they came into use gradually from 2018. There are variants with a length of 100 and 200 meters that can be coupled to form longer trains.

Order, construction, delivery and deployment planning

Scope of order

The financial volume of the order placed in June 2010 is 1.9 billion Swiss francs , making it the most expensive SBB order in history. The delivery of the 59 copies with 436 cars ordered was to take from 2013 to 2019; Options for more than 100 additional trains have been contractually agreed. Due to delays in delivery, the manufacturer compensated SBB with the delivery of three more trains, so that the total number now includes 62 multiple units with 460 cars instead of 59.

This was preceded in April 2009 by a tender for 59 double-decker multiple units for long-distance traffic, 50 of which were 200 meters long and 9 were 100 meters long. The order includes a total of three versions.

The new double-decker trains will be built by Bombardier in the factories in Villeneuve VD (Switzerland) and Görlitz (Germany). According to the original plan, the first Twindexx Swiss Express should go into regular operation with the timetable change in December 2013. In November 2014, after various delays, it was announced that the first deployment would take place in December 2017. As compensation for the delay, Bombardier will deliver 62 trains to SBB in 2020 instead of 59.

Delay in delivery

After the SBB and Bombardier built a 1: 1 model and had it assessed by experts and stakeholders in 2011, the resulting change requests led to a delay in the planned delivery. In addition, the car bodies were originally designed so that they could be used for journeys with up to 200 km / h in the Gotthard Base Tunnel was not enough. Therefore, commissioning was planned for December 2015 at the earliest since 2012.

Due to a legal dispute between the organizations Integration Handicap and the Foundation for the Promotion of a Disabled-Friendly Building Environment on the one hand and SBB on the other hand to make disabled people worse off, the delivery was also delayed. The reason was a ruling by the Federal Administrative Court, which stipulated that another compartment for the disabled should be set up in the non-dining area on the trains. The Federal Court ruled on 22 February 2013, however for SBB. The previously planned handicapped compartments are therefore sufficient. This confirmed the decision of the Federal Office of Transport from 2011. Overall, the legal dispute generated follow-up costs of CHF 10 million.

In November 2014, SBB and Bombardier agreed on a new delivery schedule. According to this, the interregional compositions are to be put into operation at the end of 2016, the long-distance trains at the end of 2017. SBB does not want to accept any trials with not yet fully developed vehicles on customers. Provided that the test runs in spring 2015 go to the satisfaction of SBB, the railway will receive three additional trains as compensation for the delivery delay from Bombardier.

The deadline at the end of 2016 could not be met either. The first interregional train composition was finally put into operation on February 26, 2018. The fleet is now to be gradually integrated into operations in the course of 2019.

Due to technical problems and insufficient ride comfort, the new train could not be used by SBB on the St. Gallen – Geneva intercity route in May 2019. Bombardier is expected to deliver the last of the 62 trains by 2021.

Resource planning

The plan was to install the Twindexx on the St. Gallen – Geneva and Romanshorn – Brig and from December 2015 on the Konstanz – Lucerne line to be used. Due to delays, the use of the IR trains was planned for December 2016 and the IC trains for December 2017.

SBB has upgraded existing rolling stock and is keeping it in use longer than planned. The SBB is therefore only dependent on the Twindexx from the 2019/20 timetable change. Bombardier believes, however, that it will receive approval for the trains by the end of summer 2017 and that it will be able to deliver 23 trains with 184 cars by the end of the year. For the interim storage of the car bodies that have already been built, Bombardier has rented the area of ​​the decommissioned Collombey refinery in order to be able to park the already completed trains next to the tracks on their own area in Villeneuve and Görlitz.

From 2020, it can be used on the Gotthard route (where the Gotthard base tunnel means that tilting technology will no longer be required). In addition, routes to Basel, Chur, Interlaken and Valais are candidates for this train later.

The train is to use WAKO (roll compensation), good acceleration and minor structural measures to reduce the travel time on the Bern – Lausanne line from the current 66 minutes to less than 60 minutes, which allows Lausanne to set up a clock node every full and half hour.

From February 2018, SBB began using the first trains in so-called guided use as IR 17 between Zurich and Bern and later as RE between Zurich and Chur. Since the timetable change in December 2018, they have been running regularly on Interregio lines 13 (Zurich – St. Gallen – Chur) and 37 (Zurich – Aarau – Basel). In mid-August 2019, the use of individual trains on Intercity Line 3 (Basel – Zurich – Chur) began.

Operating license

At the end of October 2017, an online newspaper reported that the acceptance was not yet possible due to software problems by the Federal Office of Transport (FOT). On November 30, 2017, after a software update, a provisional operating license was issued, initially for one year, as safe operation was now guaranteed. The trains can thus be used on the SBB network in 2018. However, before an unlimited operating license could be granted, smaller (also safety-relevant) assemblies would have to be made functional; this would have been done by the end of 2018. One of the not yet functioning modules is the roll compensation, which means that the cornering speed has to be reduced.

On January 29, 2018, Inclusion Handicap, the Swiss umbrella organization for the disabled, filed a complaint against the temporary operating license issued by the Federal Office of Transport (BAV) with the Federal Administrative Court , as it is not certain that people with disabilities can use the train independently, as the Swiss do Disability Equality Act (BehiG) required. The procedure has no effect on the delayed commissioning of the train. In order to avoid further delays, Inclusion Handicap had explicitly waived the suspensive effect of the procedure.

From February 26, 2018, the first scheduled deployments as Interregio on the Zurich – Bern route and from May as RE on the Zurich – Chur route.

On November 5, SBB and Inclusion Handicap reached an out-of-court agreement on the implementation of four of the 15 pending legal requests.

On November 15, 2018, SBB received a second temporary operating license for all versions of the Twindexx. This approval is initially limited to two years, as there are still a few requirements to be met in the area of ​​the ETCS train control system.

On November 22, 2018, the Federal Administrative Court dismissed the Inclusion Handicap complaint in ten of the eleven remaining appeals. The court partially agreed with the disabled umbrella organization on one point. On January 10, 2019, Inclusion Handicap announced that it would take nine legal petitions and the “horrific party compensation” to the Federal Supreme Court .

Basic data and equipment

All trains are designed for a speed of 230 km / h, they are approved for a top speed of 200 km / h. All versions are run in two classes. In the first and second class there will be sockets at every seat.

For the Inter- regional traffic is planned

  • 9 copies in version IR 100 , a four-part multiple unit 100 meters in length with 340 seats
  • 30 copies as an eight-part, 200-meter-long version IR 200 with 696 seats

and for the Intercity traffic

  • 23 copies as version IC 200 , also 200 meters long and with eight cars, one of which is a dining car. This train offers 621 seats.

The naming of the three versions includes the train length in meters, but not, as one might think, the final speed.

All versions of the fixtures include business compartments, electronic seat reservation and video surveillance. In addition, the passenger cars are less prone to pressure, as the vehicles are also intended to drive in Germany and are built and also approved according to the relevant German standards. Especially in the IC 200 includes a large restaurant and a family car. The toilets are also bigger and there is at least one changing table per train .

Drive technology

The Bombardier Twindexx Swiss Express contains a distributed drive system in which either six or twelve traction motors are used in the bogies of the four or eight-part units, which are 100 or 200 meters long. Six out of eight cars (or in the case of the four-part trains: three out of four cars) of the train are therefore railcars and the units are therefore railcar trains. This is an essential difference to the sister platform Twindexx Vario , in which non-powered double-decker intermediate cars are coupled with terminal double-decker railcars or locomotives. Similar distributed railcar systems as in the Twindexx Swiss Express are used in the Velaro platform .

Compared with an equally long train of IC2000 -vans and Re-460 - locomotive drive system consumes because of the built-in synchronous motors less power with permanent magnets around ten percent.

Roll compensation

Compared to other double-decker multiple units, the Twindexx Swiss Express is characterized above all by a variant of the tilting technology , called WAKO ( active roll compensation ). This roll compensation is intended to prevent the car body from leaning outwards in curves and thus allow higher speeds in curves. In contrast to active tilting technology, which allows a tilt of up to 8 °, here it is only 2 °. In contrast to active systems, the WAKO should be very fail-safe due to the lower technical complexity of the system. As this is a novel technology, a test program has been planned and started. First of all, from January 25 to July 2011, an IC-2000 double-decker car with bogies was tested with Wako. Wako is then to be installed in the first two Twindexx, with which the approximately one-year type tests are carried out. If Wako proves itself in everyday operation over the next two years, the other Twindexx should also be equipped with it. However, if the technology cannot be used, the trains can continue to run without roll compensation. As a contractual penalty, the manufacturer Bombardier would have to compensate SBB with up to CHF 100 million.

With the roll compensation, depending on the elevation, curves can be driven through approx. 9 to 15 percent faster. For this purpose, a new speed series "W" was introduced, which lies between the speed series "R" (for conventional trains) and "N" (tilting trains).
