The University of Mumbai (abbreviated UoM or MU ; Marathi : मुंबई विद्यापीठ , Hindi : मुंबई विश्वविद्यालय ) is a state university based in Mumbai . The university is spread over various locations in Mumbai, Thane , Raigad , Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg . Academic degrees are awarded to around 1,100 students each year. The university also includes world-famous research institutes such as the Mumbai Institute of Chemical Technology , the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and the Tata Memorial Hospital . The university is one of the oldest in India . The university has over 500,000 students through its affiliated colleges. The governor of Maharashtra State is formally the President of the University (Chancellor). The administration of the university is incumbent on the Vice-Chancellor, Rajan M. Welukar. The Aakash was developed at the university .
history
The university was founded in 1857 as the University of Bombay in what was then British India on the model of British universities. It is one of the three oldest universities in India. In 1858 the Jesuit College of St. Xavier's College was attached to the university. It was given its current name after a government decision on September 4, 1996.
Locations
The university is spread over many locations. The two most important are:
- Fort Campus (the founding site in Mumbai )
- Kalina Campus (in Mumbai ): Mainly social sciences as well as humanities, mathematics and biotechnology are taught here. The Jawaharlal Nehru Library, the largest library in Mumbai, is located on this campus.
