The Bonn is a supply ship and the largest ship in the German Navy of the type EGV 702 , also Berlin class. It is the third built unit in this class. It is named after the federal city of Bonn .

Design and construction

"Hot flag and pennant" for commissioning

The new building was laid on keel at the Peene shipyard in Wolgast on September 16, 2010 , but the official start of construction took place in March 2010 with the first steel cut for the deck structure at the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG). The hull built in Wolgast left the building dock on April 27, 2011 and was towed to Emden for final equipment in May . On May 30, 2011, the sea supply mast in Emden and the following day the superstructures made by FSG were placed on the hull.

In the presence of the then Minister of Defense , Thomas de Maiziere , the ship on 17 April 2012 by Hanne Hufschmidt, the wife of the then Bonn mayor was Jürgen Nimptsch , on the grounds of the Emden shipyard and Dockbetriebe GmbH in the name Bonn baptized.

The ship was originally supposed to be put into service in October 2012 at the Wilhelmshaven naval base . Due to construction delays, which were also caused by the bankruptcy of P + S Werften , the Bonn could not be put into service until September 13, 2013.

Deviations from the other ships in the class

The Bonn differs in a number of technical aspects from its sister ships, which were built more than ten years earlier. The operating experience of the sister ships was taken into account in the design and construction. The Bonn has a different propulsion system, which is better tailored to the current mission profile of the ships. As a result, the Bonn should consume significantly less fuel at changing speeds. In addition, she has a higher performance since the other ships could not reach the required speed of 20  knots .

Instead of four diesel generators and an emergency generator for generating electrical energy, five diesel generators of the same type were installed, one of which is separately designed for emergency electricity generation and routine operation, especially in the port.

Further modifications concern the helicopter control, the medical facilities, the rescue system and the dinghies.

Calls

  • As the flagship of the standing NATO task force Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 , which was led by Flotilla Admiral Jörg Klein at the time , the Bonn under frigate captain Jobst Berg began her involvement in Operation Active Endeavor (OAE) in the eastern Mediterranean in January 2016 . At the end of February 2016, the mission to reconnaissance, surveillance and observation of boat and ship movements in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey began. The mission is to cooperate with the EU Frontex mission “Poseidon Sea” and curb uncontrolled immigration to Europe. Federal Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen visited the ship and crew on April 20, 2016.
