Fouquieria columnaris is a species of plant of the genus Fouquieria in the monotypic family of the Fouquieriaceae. Common names are Cirio [ ˈθi.ɾio ], Boojum [ ˈbuː.dʒʌm ] and Cototaj [ ˈkototax ] ( Seri ). Their habitus is reminiscent of the species Pachypodium lealii and the genus Alluaudia .

Fouquieria columnaris grows tree-shaped with a simple, thick, 1 to 16 (rarely up to 24) meter high trunk, which slowly tapers towards the top. At the base, the trunk diameter is 20 to 40 (rarely up to 64) centimeters. The greyish green bark is smooth. Numerous, spirally arranged, thin, woody side shoots with a length of 30 to 60 centimeters and a diameter of 5 to 7 millimeters arise from the trunk. There are 5 to 25 millimeter long thorns on the side shoots . The alternate leaves are narrowly ovate. They are 15 to 20 millimeters long and 5 to 6 millimeters wide. Two to three smaller leaves about 5 millimeters long and 1 millimeter wide arise from the leaf axils .

The inflorescences appear clustered in the crown, but sometimes also terminally on the side shoots. The panicles are 13 to 40 (rarely up to 60) centimeters long. Its 6 to 8 millimeters long, fragrant flowers are creamy yellow. The 10 to 12 stamens protrude.

The chromosome number is 2n = 72.

Systematics and distribution

Fouquieria columnaris is distributed in Mexico in the state of Baja California , on Isla Ángel de la Guarda and in the state of Sonora south of Puerto Libertad .

The first description as Idria columnaris was published in 1860 by Albert Kellogg . In 1885 he assigned the species to the genus Fouquieria .

A synonym is Fouquieria gigantea Orcutt .
