occupation

Borgman is a Dutch psychological thriller with mystery elements from 2013 by Alex van Warmerdam . The film ran in Cannes 2013 in the competition for the Palme d'Or .

action

Three tramps, who live in dwellings and communicate via cell phones , are chased away by angry villagers. One of the chased, who later introduces himself as Camiel Borgman, asks the residents of a villa to be allowed to take a bath. He also claims that he knew the woman in the house from before. The husband loses his nerve and beats the homeless man until he collapses in front of his house.

In the evening, Marina, the wife, discovers the wounded man in her summer house. Actually, she wants to get rid of the stranger as quickly as possible. But she soon falls under the spell of the eerie stranger. She supports him passively when he tries to take the place of the gardener. However, it turns out that Borgman and his cronies are nefarious murderers: the gardener is poisoned and his wife is strangled. Other secondary characters also perish violently in the course of the film.

As the new gardener, Richard, Marina's husband, hires Borgman after a subtle application. Step by step, the intruder and his friends take control of Marina's family. All instructions to the children or the nanny are mysteriously followed without resistance. In the end, the couple are also poisoned and the three children and the nanny leave with the gang.

interpretation

Oil painting "Mareridt" by Nikolaj Abraham Abildgaard around 1800: a grimaceous figure crouches on a naked, sleeping woman
The historical Nachtmahr motif is taken up several times in the film.

There are numerous symbolisms in the film that allow various individual and overall interpretations: The nightmare motif is cited several times in the film when Camiel crouches naked on the sleeping Marina. The invaders, seemingly transformable into dogs, can be associated with the appearance of mythological hellhounds . The name Borgman etymologically goes back to medieval rent collectors. The initial situation and individual parts of the plot overlap with the play John Gabriel Borkman by Henrik Ibsen . In religious interpretations, the first name of the protagonist, Camiel, is also emphasized, which is similar to the name of the archangel Camael . This is said to have expelled Adam and Eve from paradise .

The expulsion of the tramps at the beginning, " branding " Richard, the operation of the nanny and children, theater performance and garden renovation are other noticeable motifs that are discussed in various ways.

reception

Borgman achieved a rating of 66/100 points at Metacritic , based on 22 receptions. At Rotten Tomatoes , 86% of the reviews are positive. The average rating is 7/10 based on 56 reviews. In conclusion, it says: "The unpredictability of Borgman is likely to confuse and captivate the audience, one way or another, he is a refreshingly original experiment weird horror."

“Dramaturgically stringent and highly exciting, the film leaves a feeling of threat that can be interpreted in many ways. Worth seeing from 16. "

"Alex van Warmerdam courageously mixes motifs by Jean Renoir and Luis Buñuel into a satirical thriller about the intrusion of chaos into tidy middle-class life."

“The Dutchman Alex van Warmerdam looks into the depths of the human psyche. His film about the creeping infiltration of a middle-class family wanders between grotesque comedy, bizarre fairy tale and subtle horror trip. The suggestive narrative puts the viewer in a state of existential uncertainty. There are no explanations for what happens, even the details of the manipulation remain puzzling and incomprehensible. Borgman is a macabre nightmare about the unfathomable power of evil. "
