Boris Alexandrovich Kolchin

Boris Alexandrovich Koltschin ( Russian Борис Александрович Колчин ; born June 10 . Jul / 23. June  1914 greg. In Sormovo, now Rajon Nizhny Novgorod ; † 11. January 1984 in Moscow ) was a Russian historian , archaeologist and university professor .

Life

Kolchin received a technical education and worked as a draftsman and designer from 1930–1935. Then he began studying at the Faculty of History of Moscow University (MGU), which he completed in 1941 with Artemi Vladimirovich Arzichowski at the Chair of Archeology . After the start of the German-Soviet War , he was drafted into the Red Army on June 30, 1941 and deployed on the Southwest Front in July 1942 . After he was encircled , he was taken to a camp near the Bolshaya Inta mine . In 1945 he returned to Moscow and worked in the Lenin Library .

1946 Koltschin began postgraduate at the Institute of Archeology (IA) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN SSSR, 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)). 1947-1948 he led one of the excavations on the Novgorod Yaroslav court . 1947-1983 he was one of the leading figures of the Novgorod Archaeological Expedition (NAE) of the MGU. He also adopted work techniques and organizational principles for work in the Gulag . In 1949 his first publication appeared on the metallographic examination of old Russian iron objects . From 1949 he was a research assistant at the IA. In 1950 he defended his candidate dissertation on smelting and metalworking in ancient Russia .

In 1952 Kolchin became vice-head of the NAE. He introduced technical aids to archaeological work. He used physical and chemical methods, particularly metallography and spectroscopy , when examining the metal finds . He simulated the old metallurgical processes. He began a broad-based program to use dendrochronological dating. In 1961 he defended his doctoral thesis on Novgorod's dendrochronology . This was followed by the appointment of professor at the IA, where he worked for a long time as a teacher.

Kolchin founded the Laboratory for Scientific Methods at the IA and in 1963 organized an all-union conference on the application of new methods in archeology. In 1970 he organized the archeology section in the Moscow Society of Naturalists .
