Borotba

The association "Borotba" ("fight"; Ukrainian Боротьба ; Ob'jednannja "Borot'ba" / Об'єднання "Боротьба" ; pronunciation: [ bɔrɔdʲˈba ]) is a left-wing organization in Ukraine . The group defines itself as revolutionary, Marxist-Leninist and anti-fascist . Sections of the Ukrainian left, on the other hand, accuse Borotba of militarist or pro-Russian nationalist positions.

History and positions

The organization was established in May 2011 after the unification of part of the Organization of Marxists ( Організація марксистів ), the youth organization " Che Guevara " ( Молодіжна організація "Че Гевара" ), the movement of youth against capitalism ( Молодь проти капіталізму of) and activists Communist Leninist Youth Association of Ukraine ( Ленинского коммунистического союза молодёжи Украины , Komsomol ), the Communist Party of Ukraine and the "All-Ukrainian Workers Union" founded. Delegates from Kiev , Donetsk , Odessa , Dnipropetrovsk , Crimea , Vinnytsia , Luhansk , Krivoy Rog and other Ukrainian cities took part in the founding congress. Foreign guests from Sweden and Russia were also present. Borotba has links to the Left Front ( Левый фронт ) in Russia.

According to Borotba , they initially took part in the Euromaidan protests in Kiev, but withdrew after right-wing forces had gained the upper hand there - in the eyes of the organization - and there had been multiple violence against the organization and its activists.

Borotba condemned the overthrow of President Yanukovych and the change of government in February 2014 as a “Western-backed fascist coup ” and called for a socialist revolution in Ukraine against the government of the “ultra-liberals and Nazis”.

On March 1, 2014, the Borotba, together with pro-Russian nationalist organizations, stormed the Kharkiv administration building occupied by Maidan activists. Borotba described the storm as an "anti-nationalist" action against right-wing (pro-Ukrainian) groups, u. a. the right sector. According to information from left-wing organizations and the well-known Ukrainian writer Serhiy Schadan , the occupiers were then led through a "corridor of shame" in which the former occupiers, including left-wing activists, were beaten. On April 15, 2014, the house of Borotba was searched and, according to the Ukrainian television broadcaster Telekanal 24, 20 Molotov cocktails were found in the organization's Kharkiv office.

During the riots in Odessa on May 2, 2014, Borotba member Andrei Brashevsky was killed by a nationalist mob, according to the organization. Since this and other attacks on members and offices of Borotba, the organization has only been operating underground.

The leader of the Odessite regional organization of the Borotba, Aleksej Albu, went to the Crimea annexed by the Russian Federation, where he met on May 24, 2014 together with a representative of the right-wing conservative party "Rodina" (Homeland), Aleksandr Vasilyev, and a representative of the Neo-Nazi organization "Slav Unity", Dmitrij Odninow, set up a "Committee for the Liberation of Odessa".

Borotba’s leadership includes Yevgeny Golschkin, Sergey Kiritschuk, Yevgeny Wallenberg, Andrej Mantschuk, Wassilij Terestschuk, Viktor Shapinov and Denis Levin.

Several radical left and anarchist organizations in Ukraine accuse Borotba of collaborating with "conservative, nationalist and radical right" pro-Russian groups and spreading "blatant lies and distortions of the facts" in order to "target foreign leftists and anti-fascists To deceive".

Borotba rejects the allegations and, in turn, accuses these groups of “hiding their 'leftist character' on the Euromaidan and in reality helping to bring open Nazis to power as well as another oligarchic clan that is responsible for the loans and austerity measures of the IMF accepted ”. The signatories of the “defamatory declaration” against Borotba “are anti- conservative and at the same time support the nationalist , clerical and anti-Semitic protest at the Euromaidan,” writes Borotba .

At the end of June 2014, further allegations of militaristic, homophobic and anti-Semitic tendencies were raised among Borotba, whereupon a joint event between DIE LINKE party and Borotba on July 2, 2014 in Hamburg and an event on July 3, 2014 in Kiel were canceled. In a declaration forwarded by the regional office coordination of the LEFT parliamentary group and by regional associations, the cancellation of events in northern Germany was justified by the "sometimes extremely misleading image that Borotba would give to the public" . It had previously been criticized that the founder of Borotba, Sergej Kiritschuk, who lived in exile in Berlin, had tried to refer two Russian "pinstripe Nazis" to left-wing initiatives. Kiritschuk claims to have not known her well and to have taken her for "bourgeois journalists".
