natural reserve
Most sections of the Borstenbachtal are under nature protection. The valley is characterized as a near-natural sieve system as is typical for the Ravensberger Land . The box-shaped valley is partially delimited by clear slopes. The structurally rich biotope complex consists of oak and beech forests , alder and ash forests along the stream , wet grassland areas, diverse wet fallow land with sedges and reeds, as well as natural flowing and still waters. The course of the river is largely natural, meandering with flat and steep banks, gravel banks and wooded banks.
There are two nature reserves : in Vlotho (Herford), the NSG Borstenbach and in Bad Oeynhausen (Minden-Lübbecke) the NSG Borstenbachtal .
