Bortnikovite is a very rarely occurring mineral from the mineral class of "elements (including natural alloys or intermetallic compounds, carbides, nitrides, phosphides and silicides)" with the chemical composition Pd 4 Cu 3 Zn and thus a natural alloy , more precisely an intermetallic compound made of palladium , copper and zinc in a molar ratio of 4: 3: 1.

Bortnikovit crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system , but has so far only in the form of monitoring margins to about 50-60 microns in thickness and about 50 to 150 microns in length on larger Isoferroplatin - grains are found. The mineral is opaque in every form and shows a metallic sheen on the surfaces of the steel-gray to white grain surfaces .

Etymology and history

Was first discovered in a Bortnikovit soaps - deposit in Kondyor Massif , which for Aldanhochland in the Russian Far Eastern Federal District belonging Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). It was first described in 2007 by AG Mochalov, MD Tolkachev, Yu. S. Polekhovsky and EM Goryacheva, who named it after the well-known Russian mineralogist and ore deposit researcher Professor Nikolai Stefanovich Bortnikov.

The mineral type material is kept in the Mineralogical Museum of the St. Petersburg State University .

classification

Since the Bortnikovite was only recognized as an independent mineral in 2006, it is not listed in the Strunz mineral system (8th edition), which has been outdated since 2001 . Only in the "Lapis Mineralienverzeichnis", which was last published in 2014, which is still based on the classic system of Karl Hugo Strunz out of consideration for private collectors and institutional collections , the mineral received the system no. VII / D.16-25 .

The 9th edition of Strunz's mineral systematics , which has been in effect since 2001 and is used by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA), assigns Bortnikovite within the class of “elements” to the department of “metals and intermetallic compounds”. This is further subdivided according to the predominant metals in the compound, which have been divided into metal families according to their related properties. According to its composition, Bortnikovit can be found in the sub-section "PGE metal alloys", where it is the only member of the unnamed group 1.AG.65 .

The systematics of minerals according to Dana , which is mainly used in the English-speaking world , assigns the Bortnikovit to the class and there in the department of the same name of "elements". Here he can be found together with Nielsenit in the unnamed group 01.02.14 within the sub-section “Elements: Platinum Group Metals and Alloys”.

Chemism

Chemical composition determined on the basis of 18 samples by means of electron beam microanalysis resulted in a percentage by weight of 58.19% palladium, 27.26% copper and 8.02% zinc as well as 4.06% platinum and 1.41% iron . This corresponds to the empirical composition (Pd 3.822 Pt 0.145 ) 3.967 Cu 2.998 (Zn 0.857 Fe 0.177 ) 1.034 , which means that the elements palladium and platinum or zinc and iron indicated in the round brackets can represent each other in the formula , however, they are always in the same proportion to the other components of the mineral.

The adjusted, idealized formula is given as Pd 4 Cu 3 Zn.

Crystal structure

Bortnikovite crystallizes tetragonally in the space group P 4 / mmm (space group no. 123) with the lattice parameters a  = 6.00 ± 0.02  Å and c  = 8.50 ± 0.03 Å as well as 3 formula units per unit cell . Template: room group / 123

Education and Locations

Bortnikovite was discovered in the heavy mineral concentrates of the Kondjor ( Konder ) soap deposit in Russia, where it grows closely with isoferroplatinum and is associated with bornite , various chlorites , vanadium-containing magnetite , perovskite and titanite .

So far (as of 2018), Kondjor is the only known site for Bortnikovite.
