The Bosener Mühle is a former flour mill owned by the St. Wendel district in northern Saarland , which is now an art and cultural center .

History and the conversion to an art center

The Bosener Mühle is located between Bosen and Eckelhausen. Originally it was a flour mill that served to supply the surrounding area. In the years 1870/71, the 30-year-old farm building was converted into a large barn, and after a happy return from the Franco-German War , Jakob Veit also built the "Holy House ", which can still be seen today. In 1925 Peter Veit extended the mill building in the direction of Bosbach and added an upper floor. The main buyers of the flour were farmers from Bosen and Eckelhausen. But as early as 1931 the mill had to be stopped due to unprofitability. In 1954 the Didas family renovated the old mill building. The mill wheel and painting were dismantled, concrete ceilings and partition walls were put in and the small windows were widened from 1840. The facade was also fundamentally changed. Subsequently, the economy building was converted.

In 1972 the district of St. Wendel acquired the Bosener Mühle. The renovation to an art center took place from autumn 1978 until the inauguration in April 1980. For reasons of regional building tradition, the floor plan and exterior architecture were retained. During the renovation work, an old, walled-up window opening in the mill from 1840 was discovered. This find served as a model for all new windows. The married couple Johann Didas and Elfriede née Hauptenthal ceded their land, including the residential building, utility building and tool shed, to the St. Wendel district on July 25, 1972 as part of the land consolidation, and the couple Josef and Elise Haupenthal waived their evidenced right of residence. This cleared the way for the establishment of an art center in the Bosenenr Mühle. Numerous people from politics, culture and society supported the creation of the art center. a. the then district administrator of the St. Wendel district Waldemar Marner, mayor Hans-Georg Raab, the artist and art educator Axel C. Groß, the then Saarland Prime Minister Franz-Josef Röder , the Saarland Bundestag members Helwin Peter and Werner Zeyer . The art center was supposed to serve four art branches, which were cared for by respective artistic personalities: sculpture ( Leo Kornbrust ), painting (Axel C. Groß), writing ( Felicitas Frischmuth and Klaus Bernarding ) and music ( Robert Leonardy , Wendelin Müller-Blattau). After numerous coordination meetings, the district administration submitted specific proposals that led to the conversion of the art center.

On June 21, 1977, the association "Kunstzentrum Bosener Mühle" eV was founded in the Bosener Seehotel. The founding members elected Rolf Schneider as first chairman, Bosen local mayor Hans-Georg Raab and MdL Albert Muthweiler as his deputy, Horst Volz became the cashier and assessor was Mayor Hermann Scheid and MdL Hans-Georg Wagner . A short time later, administrative director Josef Mailänder was appointed managing director of the association by the St. Wendel district office. The topping-out ceremony took place on December 12, 1978 and on 19/20. April 1980 the inauguration of the art center. Today the art center is located directly on the north harbor of the artificially dammed Bostalsee . The mill buildings are not subject to monument protection, so they could be converted and expanded sustainably.

Art association and cultural center

history

The art center Bosener Mühle was created on the initiative of private individuals who wanted to build a place for artistic design for professional and hobby artists in the 1970s. They were and are financially supported by the Saarland Ministry for Education, Family, Women and Culture as well as by numerous sponsors from the local economy.

The sponsor of the non-profit center, which works with voluntary helpers, is a development association with the legal status of an eV. The initiator of the cultural center is the Saarland artist Axel C. Gross, and the longstanding honorary chairman of the development association is the former member of the state parliament Erwin Volz (SPD).

activities

One of the main objectives of the association is the "... promotion of cultural exchange processes in Europe of the regions" (self-statement). Since 1993, the Bosener Mühle has offered an annual exchange program between artists from European countries and Saarland artists in the form of a work grant. The artists live and work together in the mill for 14 days and then receive a group exhibition of their works created on site. In addition, the Friends' Association annually awards young artists a sponsorship prize that is linked to a scholarship.

The Art Center Bosener Mühle offers courses in drawing / painting , ceramics , sculpting , stone carving , printmaking , mixed media and calligraphy , which are led by well-known professional lecturers. In addition to the studios, the Bosener Mühle also has a gallery in which exhibitions are shown about every two months. The focus is on works by artists from the SaarLorLux and Rhineland-Palatinate region , but also well-known people such as Otmar Alt , Horst Hübsch or artists from abroad. Together with the Chemnitzer Künstlerbund and the Chamber of Crafts Chemnitz, an exhibition was held in 2010 under the title 51 ° East / 49 ° West .

The annual cultural program also offers literary readings, concerts , cabaret and other events. On November 26th, 2000, a symposium with writers who write literary texts in Moselle and Rhenish Franconian dialects took place in the Bosener Mühle. As part of this symposium, the Bosener Gruppe was founded , an association of writers from the Greater Region who dedicate themselves to the dialect.

reception

According to the specialist information on art from the Saarland University and State Library, the mill stands out in particular for its art courses. The Saarland's website emphasizes the project's “remarkable achievements”.
