The Chemnitz Botanical Garden is located approx. 3 km northwest of the center of the city of Chemnitz and shows mainly Central European plant families as well as useful plants from all over the world on an area of ​​12 hectares. Tropical plants , Mediterranean plants as well as cacti and succulents can be seen in greenhouses . There are also some animal enclosures, a school biology center and a nature conservation center on the site.

Various Central European biotopes are reproduced in the field. There are 20 different forest communities alone . The heathland is represented by juniper , gorse and dwarf shrubs . The steppe biotope, characterized by poor grassland , was modeled on a basalt knoll of the Bohemian Central Uplands. Furthermore, artificial dune landscapes with the characteristic grass and sedge vegetation have been created. In addition, there are numerous bodies of water of different types in the Chemnitz Botanical Garden, each with a characteristic fauna; they also provide a habitat for various types of insects. The animal enclosures house ferrets , raccoons , sheep , goats and small rodents , but above all numerous species of birds .

history

The garden was founded in 1898 according to plans by the gardening director Otto Werner and the school director Paul Säurich . Originally the area of ​​the garden was only 1 hectare; In 1933 it was expanded to 1.75 hectares by creating an orchard. The administration building built in 1938 is now used as an aquarium house. The garden was badly damaged in World War II ; From the beginning of the 1950s, the reconstruction took place, in 1955 the name was changed to “Station for Young Natural Scientists”. In 1975 a new administration building was built, which also houses classrooms. A new greenhouse was built in 1998 and 2002.
