geography

Street on the right bank of the Gounti Yéna in Boukoki III (2018)

Boukoki III belongs to the Boukoki district north of Niamey's historic city center . It is bordered by the streets of Boulevard Mali Béro, Avenue Maourikoye Néni, Boulevard de l'Indépendance and Avenue du Zarmaganda. The surrounding districts are Tourakou in the north, Boukoki II in the northeast, Boukoki I in the southeast, Zongo in the south and Issa Béri in the west. Boukoki III lies in a plateau with a layer of sand more than 2.5 meters deep. The dry valley Gounti Yéna runs through the district , which has an alluvial soil with a high water table that does not allow infiltration.

The standard scheme for street names in Boukoki III is rue BK 1 , where the French rue for street is followed by the abbreviation BK for Boukoki and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations.

history

In the 1960s, housing developments for immigrants from the interior of the country developed in the individual quarters of Boukoki, who moved to the capital partly because of the poor food situation in the country.

population

At the 2012 census, Boukoki III had 7883 inhabitants who lived in 1372 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 10,475 in 1,683 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 8,182 in 1,428 households.

Infrastructure

To the west of the Gounti Yéna are several ministries, offices and authorities as well as the General Seyni Kountché Stadium , which has a capacity of 35,000.
