Tourakou is located north of Niamey's historic city center. The surrounding districts are Banifandou I in the north, Djeddah Koira Mè in the east, Boukoki II in the southeast, Boukoki III in the south, Issa Béri in the southwest and Dar Es Salam in the west. The district is located on a table land with a layer of sand that is more than 2.5 meters deep, except for the northeast of the district. To the southwest of Tourakou extending Trockental Gounti yena having an alluvial soil having a high water table, which enables no infiltration.

The standard scheme for street names in Tourakou is rue KM 1 , where the French rue for street is followed by KM for Koira Mè and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations. These zones do not necessarily coincide with the administrative boundaries of the eponymous districts. The rue KM 1 scheme is used not only in Djeddah Koira Mè, but also in Tourakou.

history

Tourakou emerged as a separate city district in the 1990s, when parts of the areas earmarked for infrastructure facilities were rededicated. The place name comes from the Hausa language and means "cattle market". Literally turaaku (plural of turki ) are pegs to which cattle (intended for sale) are tied.

At the 2012 census, Tourakou had 12,921 residents who lived in 2,052 households.

The scrap metal market has existed since 1970 and is 1.4 hectares in size.
