Opened in 1947, the Tank Museum (formerly: Bovington Tank Museum ) is a tank museum in Bovington Camp , Dorset , about 20 kilometers west of Poole in south-west England . It has the world's largest collection of armored combat vehicles . The exhibition consists of a total of over 300 tanks from 26 countries. Among them is the oldest battle tanks in the world, the British prototype " Little Willie " from the First World War , the only surviving copy of the type based on it Mark I , and the only traveling copy of the German Tiger I .

The exhibition consists of five halls:

The hall on the topic of World War I shows the entire development of the British armored system with tanks of the types Mark I , II , IV , V , VIII and IX .

In the inter-war hall there is an exhibition of the Vickers A1E1 Independent , Peerless , Rolls-Royce , Lanchester 6 × 4 , Carden Loyd Tankette , Matilda II , Cruiser Mk I tanks .

The World War II hall is the largest of the museum; it contains tanks and combat vehicles from most of the states that took part in World War II. These include: the German Panzer I , II , III , IV , Panther , Tiger I, Tiger II , Jagdpanzer 38 (t) , Jagdpanther and Jagdtiger , Kettenkrad Sd.Kfz. 2 and Sd.Kfz. 251 , also the following tanks from other countries: Char B1 , Somua S-35 , Cruiser Mk. III , Comet I , Matilda Mk I, Matilda II , Churchill Mk VII , TOG2 , A33 Excelsior , A38 Valiant , T14 Assault tank , Ram Cruiser Mk II , M24 Chaffee , M3 Lee / Grant , M4 Sherman , Sherman Firefly , M10 Wolverine , M48 Patton , M26 Pershing , T17 Staghound , DUKW , SU-76 , T-26 , T-34 , KW-1 , SU-100 .

The Tamiya hall was sponsored by the manufacturer of model vehicles of the same name. Post-war tanks are on display here, including the British Centurion , the US M60 and the Soviet / Russian T-72 .

In the British Steel hall , the emphasis is on the modern composite armor ( Chobham Armor ) from the Gulf War against Iraq . It also sheds light on the 46-year history of the famous British Centurion tank from 1945 to 1991.
