Jules Timothy "Tim" Brabants , MBE (born January 23, 1977 in Chertsey , Surrey ) is a former British canoeist who won gold once and bronze twice at the Olympic Games. He was once world champion and three times European champion.

Career

Tim Brabants started canoeing at the age of ten, and from 1994 he competed internationally for the United Kingdom. He received his first international medal at the World Championships in the Canoe Marathon in 1998, when he won silver with Conor Holmes . In 1999 he took fourth place in the single kayak over 1000 meters at the European Championships, and at the 1999 World Championships he reached sixth place. The following year he finished sixth at the European Championships. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 he won behind the Norwegian Knut Holmann and the Bulgarian Petar Markowthe bronze medal over 1000 meters. This was the first ever medal for a British flat water canoeist at the Olympics.

In 2001 Brabants finished seventh at the world championships over 1000 meters and in 2003 he was fifth. At the European Championships in 2004 he won the silver medal behind the Norwegian Eirik Verås Larsen . Larsen also won the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Brabants took fifth place.

Brabants only competed internationally again in 2006 and won the European championship over 1000 meters. At the 2006 World Championships in Szeged, he finished second behind the Swede Markus Oscarsson . In 2007 Brabants won the European title in the 500-meter course, over 1000 meters, he finished second behind Eirik Verås Larsen. At the 2007 World Championships , Brabants won over 1000 meters ahead of Canadian Adam van Koeverden , and van Koeverden won over 500 meters ahead of Brabants. In 2008 Brabants won his third European title, this time again over the 1000 meter distance. At the Olympic Games in Beijing, Brabants won over 1000 meters ahead of Norwegian Eirik Verås Larsen and Australian Ken Wallace . He was the first British canoeist to win an Olympic gold medal in canoe racing. A day later he won bronze over 500 meters behind Ken Wallace and Adam van Koeverden. In 2009 Tim Brabants was inducted into the Order of the British Empire .

After a year break, Brabants returned to the regatta courses in 2010. At the European Championships he took fourth place over 500 meters, over 1000 meters he only reached eighth place. Seven weeks later, he won silver at the world championships over 1000 meters behind the German Max Hoff , over 500 meters Brabants finished fourth and over 5000 meters fifth. Tim Brabants drove his last major regatta at the 2012 Olympic Games when he finished eighth in the 1000 meters.

The 1.88 m tall Tim Brabants began his sporting career at the Elmbridge Canoe Club in Weybridge , later he joined the Royal Canoe Club in London. Tim Brabants studied medicine at the University of Nottingham alongside his sports career . In 2013 he ended his active sports career in order to concentrate fully on his profession as a doctor.
