Brady John Haran (born June 18, 1976 in Adelaide , Australia ) is an Australian independent filmmaker and video journalist . He became famous for his educational and documentary films that he produces for BBC News and for his YouTube channels, such as B. Numberphile and Periodic Videos . Brady Haran lives in Bristol , United Kingdom with his wife Kylie Pentelov, a British journalist and news anchor .

Career

Haran studied journalism for a year before being hired by the Adelaide Advertiser . In 2002 he moved from Australia to Nottingham in the UK. There he worked for the BBC , began working in film and reported for East Midlands Today , BBC News Online and BBC Broadcasters.

In 2007 Haran was filmmaker- in-residence for Nottingham Science City, as part of an agreement between the BBC and the University of Nottingham . His project Test Tube (German: "Test Tube") began with the idea of ​​producing documentation about scientists and their research. However, Haran decided to upload his raw material to YouTube; from that point on, Periodic Videos and Sixty Symbols evolved . Haran then left the BBC to produce YouTube videos full-time.

After Test Tube , Haran decided to create more YouTube channels. In his first five years as an independent filmmaker, he created over 1,500 videos. In 2012 he was a producer, editor and interviewer on twelve YouTube channels, such as B. The Periodic Table of Videos , Sixty Symbols and Numberphile, on which he collaborates frequently with the University of Nottingham. Haran's The Periodic Table of Videos with Martyn Poliakoff received the 2013 Royal Society of Chemistry Nyholm Prize for Education . Haran is also co-host of the Hello Internet podcast , which he is producing with the YouTube filmmaker CGP Gray .

recognition

The chemistry videos produced in collaboration with Martyn Poliakoff for viewers with no technical background received great recognition. Haran and Poliakoff made over 600 short videos covering the elements ( The Periodic Table of Videos ) and related topics in chemistry. Your YouTube channel had over 175 million views in February 2018. The Gold Bullion Vault video, released December 7, 2012, was filmed in the vaults of the Bank of England ; it was viewed over two million times in the following two months.

Haran and Poliakoff co-authored an article in Nature Chemistry and an essay for journal Science discussing the implications of The Periodic Table of Videos .
