The fire director Westphal is a fire boat of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA). The ship is operated by Flotte Hamburg , a subsidiary of the HPA. It is the largest fireboat used in the Port of Hamburg to date . The ship is named after Johannes Westphal , who was appointed head of the Hamburg professional fire brigade by the British military government in August 1945 . The fire boat is available to the Hamburg fire brigade , which also provides the crew.

The ship of the type “Löschboot LB 40” ordered in October 2016 was built under the construction number 7030 at the Fassmer shipyard in Berne / Motzen. The keel was laid on April 26, 2017 and the pile lift on May 24, 2018. The ship was christened on November 26, 2018 in Hamburg . Godmother was Eva Maria Tschentscher, the wife of Peter Tschentscher , First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The construction costs of the ship amounted to around 16 million euros.

The ship is of two Caterpillar - Diesel engines of the type C18 with 500  kW power driven at 1800 / min. The motors act on two Schottel rudder propellers . The ship reaches a speed of around 12  knots . It is also equipped with two electrically powered bow thrusters with an output of 330 kW. Three diesel generators are available for the power supply on board. The two Caterpillar C18 on-board units produce 460 ekW / 50 Hz. The Caterpillar C4.4-Acert port unit with 99 ekW / 50 Hz is equipped with a soundproof hood.

All engines are equipped with an exhaust gas aftertreatment system with soot particle filter and catalytic converter for selective catalytic reduction . The engines run on synthetic GtL fuels.

The ship is equipped with three extinguishing monitors , each of which can throw up to 180 meters and 110 meters high, as well as three combined water and foam nozzles. The three monitors together can emit 120,000 liters of water per minute. Three Caterpillar C32 Acert diesel engines, each with an output of 1134 kW at 1800 rpm, are available for fire-fighting operations. The extinguishing pumps can pump a total of 120,000 liters of extinguishing water per minute. The ship is equipped for fire fighting, rescuing people and technical assistance. A first aid room based on the model of an ambulance is available on board for rescue operations . In the aft area there is a working crane on the starboard side.

The ship is kept ready for use at all times. It can also be used for inspection trips and other tasks.
