Branka Stilinović

Branka Stilinović (born October 24, 1926 in Zagreb , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † November 4, 2016 in Rijeka , Croatia ) was a Yugoslav opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Branka Stilinović completed her vocal training at the Pavao Markovac Music School , where she studied with Nada Pirnat. She got her first engagement, before her actual stage career, as a singer and speaker at the radio station Radio Zagreb . There she was under contract from 1949 to 1958. In 1958, after Kutsch / Riemens in 1957, she made her stage debut as an opera singer at the Croatian National Theater in Rijeka as Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana .

In 1959 she was engaged as a soloist at the Zagreb National Opera , of which she was a permanent member of the ensemble until her retirement in 1979. With her “brilliant” soprano treble and the “suggestive expressiveness of her voice” she sang mainly the youthful-dramatic and the dramatic soprano subject. Her stage roles included: Donna Anna in Don Giovanni , Abigaille in Nabucco , Amelia in Un ballo in maschera , the title role in Aida , the title role in La Gioconda , Leonore in Fidelio , Senta in The Flying Dutchman , Micaëla in Carmen , Floria Tosca in Tosca , Maddalena in Andrea Chénier , Tatjana in Eugene Onegin , Lisa in Queen of Spades , Marie in The Bartered Bride and Jaroslawna in Prince Igor .

In addition to the classical roles, she has interpreted numerous roles in operas by Croatian and Yugoslav composers, such as the Irmengarde in the opera Porin by Vatroslav Lisinski , the two soprano roles of Eva and Jelena in the opera Nikola Šubić-Zrinjski by Ivan Zajc and the Đula in Ero the rogue . In December 1964 she sang at the Zagreb Opera in the world premiere of Jakov Gotovac's Dalmaro opera .

In 1963 she was awarded the Milka Trnina Singing Prize for her extraordinary interpretation of the roles Eva and Jelena in Nikola Šubić-Zrinjski and for her performance as Elisabetta di Valois in Verdi's opera Don Carlos .

She made regular guest appearances at the National Opera in Belgrade . She has made international guest appearances in Germany ( Cologne Opera House ), in the GDR ( Berlin State Opera , Komische Oper Berlin ), in Switzerland ( Basel Theater ), in Italy (Bologna, Naples), Hungary ( Budapest State Opera ) and in Poland. She also performed at the Athens Opera Festival.

Stilinović was also considered an extraordinary concert singer, especially in the creation of oratorios and in the interpretation of the soprano part in the Verdi Requiem . After finishing her stage career, she taught as a professor at the Zagreb Conservatory.

Sound recordings with Stilinović appeared on record at the Yugoslav music label Jugoton , including complete recordings of the two operas Ero, Der Schelm and Nikola Šubić-Zrinjski . In addition, a solo recital with her was published on Jugoton.

Branka Stilinović died on November 4, 2016 at the age of 90 in Rijeka. The funeral ceremony took place on November 9, 2016 in the Zagreb crematorium.
