The Eisenach brewery is a former brewery that emerged from a merger of various Eisenach breweries and was last housed in a building complex in Eisenach in Thuringia, which is now a listed building .

History of the brewery

Hops were grown in the Eisenach area as early as the Middle Ages. The monastery brewery on Frauenplan , which had existed since the 13th century, was converted into a princely brewery in 1525, became the property of the city of Eisenach in 1610 and was, with interruptions, in operation until 1839. In 1828 there were 244 authorized brewers in Eisenach who together built a rock cellar for beer storage and thus established the Eisenach brewery. After the brewery's privileges ceased to exist, a brewing cooperative was founded. In 1840, the cooperative began building a malt house and a central brewery building next to the old rock cellar.

Castle brewery

The castle brewery can be traced back to 1635. The former Barfüßer - or Franciscan - monastery , whose school Martin Luther attended as a pupil from 1498 to 1501 under Rector Trebonius, was located in its walls . During the Reformation , this monastery - like all monasteries in Eisenach - was expropriated and used for other purposes. The Barfüßer monastery was converted into a brewery, called Schlossbrauerei, which was owned by the ducal chamber until 1839 and then sold to a civil association.

Petersberger Brewery Erbslöh

In 1872 the "Petersberger Brewery" was founded with completely new factory buildings on the legendary Eisenacher Petersberg . The builders were the merchant from Barmen and later Grand Ducal Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach Commercial Counselor Albert Erbslöh and his wife's uncle, Alexander Schuchard, who owned the brewery until 1892. The factory buildings were sold in 1939 and demolished in the 1970s in order to build a new building area.

United Eisenacher Breweries

In 1892 Erbslöh merged with the "Schlossbrauerei" as the United Eisenacher Breweries, Petersberger und Schloßbrauerei AG , where he headed this new company until his death. In 1904 the company's share capital was 1,000,000 marks compared to an annual production of 50–60,000 hectoliters of beer.

The beers enjoying great popularity in Thuringia "Wartburgbräu", dark Bavarian and lager, Pilsener style, were awarded the highest awards, for example in Gotha in 1893 with the state medal, at the Saxon-Thuringian exhibition in Leipzig in 1897 with the gold medal, and Also with the first prize, the gold medal, at the Gotha anniversary trade exhibition in 1898.

After the deaths of Albert Erbslöh and his wife, the United Eisenach breweries were transferred to the Eisenach Aktienbrauerei in 1918.

Eisenach stock brewery

In March 1874 it was decided at a general meeting of the Eisenach brewery to convert the brewery into a stock corporation. On July 15, 1874, the club brewery was founded, which was renamed the Eisenach stock brewery in 1886 . From 1914 the beer of the Aktienbrauerei was sold as a protected brand under the name Wartburg beer .

In the period that followed, the Aktienbrauerei took over several other breweries, such as the United Eisenacher Breweries in 1918, the Zinn brewery from Berka an der Werra in 1921, the W. Engelhard brewery from Bad Hersfeld in 1924 and the Kloster-Aktien brewery Bad Salzungen in 1929

After the Second World War

After the Second World War , the stock brewery was expropriated in 1948 by order No. 64 of the Soviet military administration and transferred to a state-owned company (VEB) . In 1969 it became part of the Erfurt beverage combine and after the fall of the Wall in 1990 it was privatized as Eisenacher Brauerei GmbH . This filed for bankruptcy in 2010.

A local investor acquired the brewery and, as Wartburg Brauerei Eisenach GmbH , launched another Eisenacher brand beer on the market in 2011. This has been brewed by the Einsiedler Brauhaus brewery since 2012 using the contract brewing process and sold as Eisenacher Wartburg-Pils . Beer production in Eisenach was stopped.

Brewery building

With the exception of the Petersberger Brewery building, the brewery buildings erected between 1825 and 1914 are located in the southern part of Eisenach below the city park on Wartburgallee opposite the Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium . The oldest buildings are the ice cellar, built in 1828, and the three-storey half-timbered building of the malt house, which was built before 1850, probably in 1839. The other structures surrounding the brewery were built as solid brick structures. The brewhouse, built in 1908 with its distinctive copper kettles from 1911, is a landmark of the brewery. The fermentation and storage cellar was reconstructed in 1962. The latest building is a warehouse at the southern end of the courtyard from 1993/94.

The brewery site, designated as a cultural monument, is now primarily used as an event location. For example, the Hop Festival and a commercial vehicle meeting have been held here every year since 1993. The brewhouse was the setting for an episode of the Dr. Kleist .

In March 2015, the eastern part of the historic development along the wall to the city park was demolished to make space for parking. The malt and brewhouse on Wartburgallee as well as the office building were preserved.

The listed property of the Eisenach brewery is now used as a climbing park.

Products after 1945

In addition to Wartburg - Pils and Wartburg - Export , the black beer Schwarzer Drache was also offered from around 1996 until bankruptcy . A bock beer was also available seasonally .

Beer from the Einsiedler Brauhaus brewery has been sold as Eisenacher Wartburg-Pils since 2012 .
