The Braunschweiger Okeraue is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony city of Braunschweig .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 118 is 320  hectares in size. It is almost completely part of the FFH area "Aller (with Barnbruch), lower Leine, lower Oker". In the north it borders on the nature reserve " Northern Okeraue between Hülperode and Neubrück ," in the south in places to the conservation area "Okertalaue". The area has been a nature reserve since December 16, 2004. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the city of Braunschweig.

The nature reserve is located in the north-west of Braunschweig. It protects the middle course of the Oker, which is still largely natural in this area, from the Ölpersee to the city limits, including the undeveloped floodplain and the adjacent hillside terraces and inland dunes . The area is characterized by a mosaic of grassland - and fallow areas and each arable - and woodlands. In the floodplain, which is still periodically flooded, there are several still waters and oxbow lakes of the Oker.

The banks of the meandering Oker are partly unpaved, so that steep banks, edges and sand deposits can arise. The river is predominantly of softwood resources and partially Auwald residues Hochstaudenfluren and extensive sedge and reeds accompanied.

The river is an important resting and feeding habitat for migrating water birds such as grebes , Common Goldeneye , Common Merganser and Smew . The often moist meadows along the river are habitat for numerous waders .

The nature reserve is crossed by traffic routes at several points: In the south, the federal motorway 391 and the freight railway line of the former Celle – Braunschweig railway in the direction of Wendeburg as well as district road 25 cross the nature reserve. The Mittelland Canal runs through the middle of the protected area . The Oker passes under it through a culvert . In the north, the nature reserve borders on Federal Motorway 2 .
