The Mascheroder- und Rautheimer Holz is a nature reserve in the city of Braunschweig in Lower Saxony .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG BR 153 is approximately 155  hectares . About 122 hectares are part of the FFH area "Forests and small bodies of water between Mascherode and Cremlingen". It replaces the landscape protection area "Mascheroder-, Rautheimer- and Salzdahlumer Holz" in the area of the city of Braunschweig. In the southeast it borders on the almost 105 hectare nature reserve “Mascheroder-, Rautheimer- and Salzdahlumer Holz” in the Wolfenbüttel district . The natural monument " Landwehr im Rautheimer Holz" is located within the nature reserve on the border with the Wolfenbüttel district . The area has been under nature protection since December 29, 2018. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the city of Braunschweig.

The nature reserve is located in the southeast of the city of Braunschweig. It includes mixed deciduous forests on historically old forest locations. The forests , which are characterized as oak-hornbeam forests , bedstraw oak-hornbeam forests and woodruff beech forests, have in part emerged from medium-sized forest management . They accumulate in often damp locations and are temporarily flooded in the west of the nature reserve. In the southeast of the nature reserve there are often dry, warm, orchid-rich forest communities. There are numerous small bodies of water within the forests. The oak-hornbeam forests of stalk or sessile oak and hornbeam dominated to make up ash , small-leaved lime and maple join. In the herbaceous layer of the oak-hornbeam forests there are forest cowslips , high cowslips and grass cows , while in the herbaceous layer of the bedstraw oak-hornbeam forests there are woodclaws , yellow anemones and turkish lily . The woodruff beech forests, which occur only in small areas in comparison to the oak-hornbeam forests, are dominated by the red beech . There are also ash, bird cherry , norway and sycamore maple . Wood anemones , spring cups and woodruff can be found in the herb layer .

The nature reserve is an important habitat for bats as greater mouse-eared , Bechstein's bat , Natterer's bat , Large and whiskered bat , Barbastelle and lesser noctule and woodpeckers as black and middle spotted woodpecker . The small bodies of water and damp forest locations are home to agile frogs , small water frogs , moor frogs and crested newts .

The forests in the nature reserve are used for forestry purposes. The area is also used for local recreation . Numerous forest paths run through the woods. The area borders on the settlement areas of the Braunschweig district of Mascherode , which it encloses to the west, north and east. In the northwest it borders on the settlement areas of the Südstadt district , in the west primarily on Heidbergpark in the Heidberg district . Another forest area adjoins it in the southeast, otherwise the nature reserve borders on agricultural areas .
