bref is a bi-weekly  magazine  from Switzerland. It was founded in 2016 and is published by the Reformed Media , the publishing house of the Protestant Reformed churches in German-speaking Switzerland based in Zurich .

The magazine deals with topics from the areas of church, religion, culture and society and contains reports, interviews, essays, columns and book reviews. The editorial team works according to journalistic standards and the journalistic principles of the Reformed Media .

concept

The magazine wants to allow sufficient space for the exchange of views in the field of theology, church, religion, ethics and society and therefore presents a spectrum of opinions. Value is placed on an independent design and visual language.

Staff and authors

As an author's magazine for religion, culture and society, well-known authors regularly publish in bref, u. a. the publicist Klara Obermüller , the Pulitzer Prize winner Daniel Etter , the Egon Erwin Kisch Prize winner Erwin Koch , the author Tobias Haberl and the journalist and writer Barbara Lukesch . In 2016, the blogger and atheist Kafi Freitag was a columnist at bref, which caused controversy within the evangelical reformed churches. Kafi Freitag was followed by the blogger and journalist Kübra Gümüşay , the theologian Bruno Amatruda and Yves Kugelmann , editor-in-chief of the Jewish magazines Tachles and Aufbau . The writer and Georg Büchner Prize winner Sibylle Lewitscharoff , the Reformed pastor Roland Diethelm and the poet and Ingeborg Bachmann Prize winner Nora Gomringer have been writing alternately since 2019 . In the Camenisch category , the Swiss photographer Reto Camenisch showed a picture from his work and added a personal note.

Christians in Syria, a Passion Story

Photojournalist and Pulitzer Prize winner Daniel Etter uses the example of Garabet and Rosa Nasri from Raqqa to show how Christians in Syria were able to survive under the Islamic State. The report was created in cooperation with the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit / Christ & Welt. New criteria for checking facts and circumstances were also applied. The background was the scandal surrounding the Spiegel journalist Claas Relotius , who had partly invented reports.

Cooperation Die Zeit / Christ & Welt

Attitude debate

On September 21, 2017, the Synodal Council of the Reformed Churches in Bern-Jura-Solothurn decided to leave the Reformed Media Association at the end of 2018. The association is also the publisher of the bref magazine . The executive body names the magazine as the reason for leaving . The reasoning states that the contents of the magazine are largely convincing [...], but the topics dealt with in it do little to provide up-to-date information and current background knowledge about theology and religion and related social and cultural issues as well as about to mediate the individual member churches. Against this background, the costs of publishing would be disproportionate to the benefits of the magazine. No statements were made about the costs. Various media subsequently reported on the exit. In an interview, Christoph Weber-Berg , President of the Reformed Media , criticized the decision of the Synodal Council of the Reformed Churches in Bern-Jura-Solothurn. At the General Assembly on June 13, 2018, the majority of the members voted in favor of bref .

History of publication

At the beginning of 2016, bref replaced the previous product, the Reformed Press .
