Ethyl pyruvate is a chemical compound from the group of pyruvate . It has a cytoprotective effect and acts as an inhibitor of the CO 2 sensors in the yellow fever mosquito .

Ethyl pyruvate is obtained by oxidizing ethyl lactate with potassium permanganate .
