Brian Lee (born March 26, 1987 in Fargo , North Dakota ) is a former American ice hockey player who was last under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League .
Career
Brian Lee first played ice hockey for the Moorhead Spuds , the high school team of Moorhead High School , in the United States high school league system from 2003 to 2005 . After completing his high school career, Lee won the annual Minnesota Mr. Hockey award in calendar year 2005, which honors the best high school player in the US state of Minnesota . The American spent his last season as a high school actor at times with the Lincoln Stars, for whom he was active in the junior league United States Hockey League in the 2004/05 season .
He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2005 in the first round as the ninth player by the Ottawa Senators . First, however, he attended the University of North Dakota for two years and played parallel for their ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his first year at university he and his team immediately won the championship of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , in whose all-rookie team he was elected. In the 2007-08 season , the defender made his debut for the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League setting up a goal in six games. However, he spent the entire rest of the season with their farm team Binghamton Senators in the American Hockey League . For Binghamton he scored three goals in 55 games and made 22 assists.
From 2008 to 2010 Lee was on the ice for Ottawa in the NHL and Binghamton in the AHL. From the 2010/11 season , the American played exclusively for the NHL team of the Ottawa Senators. On February 27, 2012, this transferred him to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Matt Gilroy . After Lee himself when used for the end of season 2012/13 Syracuse Crunch , the farm team of the Lightning in the AHL, the cruciate ligament was torn, he was forced to the entire subsequent season to injury, after which his contract was not renewed in Tampa . In the run-up to the 2014/15 season , Lee took part in a training camp run by the Nashville Predators , where complications recurred in the knee he had previously operated on, so that in December 2014, in consultation with the treating doctors, the American decided to end his career early to avoid the risk of a to avoid potentially permanent impairment of walking. He announced that he would henceforth devote himself to a medical degree with a specialization in nursing and anesthesiology at the University of North Dakota .
International
For the USA , Lee took part in the U20 World Junior Championships in 2005 , 2006 and 2007 . His greatest success internationally was winning the bronze medal at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2007.
