The Dresden Dolls are a duo from Boston founded in 2000 . The band members are Amanda Palmer ( vocals , piano ) and Brian Viglione ( drums , percussion ). The two describe their style as " Brechtian punk cabaret," a phrase created by Palmer because she "feared" that the press might come up with a name " that would contain the word Gothic ."
Band name
The name of the band can also be an allusion to the porcelain dolls that were made in the Meissen porcelain factory near Dresden , as well as the name of the band New York Dolls , as well as a combination of two opposing symbols ( Dresden with the bombing raids and dolls, i.e. toys and thus something beautiful, childlike) can be understood. The name The Dresden Dolls also appears in the book Flowers in the Attic by VC Andrews - the delicate doll-like children (protagonists of the drama) are so named - there is also a song by the band The Fall called "Dresden Dolls".
history
The Dresden Dolls released two albums in 2004: the self-titled debut album and the live album A Is for Accident . Furthermore, the DVD Paradise was released on November 22, 2005 , which contains recordings of a live show and an interview as well as private recordings ("A Life in the Day of The Dresden Dolls - A Day of Documentary"). On April 21, 2006, the second studio album Yes, Virginia… was released.

Amanda Palmer lived in Cologne for a year and made some connections between what she experienced there and her own influences from the Boston area.
In 2005 The Dresden Dolls toured as support for the band Nine Inch Nails . At the end of their world tour, the Dresden Dolls played two concerts in the London Roundhouse on November 3rd and 4th of 2006 . These were recorded for a second live DVD, which was released in July 2007.
In 2006 they also worked on a play called The Onion Cellar (inspired by a chapter from Günter Grass ' Die Blechtrommel ). The play premiered on December 9, 2006 at the Zero Arrow Theater in Boston and was there until January 13, 2007.
Since 2007 her song Coin-Operated Boy has been used for an advertisement for a fruit dessert ("Fruchtikus") by the Austrian company Darbo .
On May 16, 2008, her album No, Virginia… was released. It contained unreleased as well as newly recorded material from the Yes, Virginia… sessions.
As part of her “There Will Be No Intermission” tour in 2019, Amanda Palmer announced that something new can be expected from the Dresden Dolls in the near future.
