Brun Argenté

Brun Argenté (also known under the name Vaccarèse ) is a red wine variety that is mainly grown in the French wine region Rhône . It is one of the 13 approved grape varieties that may be used for the assemblage of Châteauneuf-du-Pape . In practice, however, the vaccarèse is only rarely added and in small quantities. In 2004, only 0.15% of the vineyard area of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation was planted with Brun Argenté. It can also be part of the wines of the Côtes du Rhône appellation . Cultivation is recommended in the Vaucluse and Gard departments . It is also approved for commercial cultivation in the Ardèche , Drôme , Hérault and Pyrénées-Orientales departments . Between the surveys of 1958 and 1988, the area under cultivation fell from 70 hectares to 34 hectares. The most important cultivation site was the Chusclan community . There, the variety is usually blended with the well-known Grenache grape variety . The single- variety Brun Argenté wines are fruity, flowery and not too alcoholic and are therefore an excellent complement to the mostly alcohol-rich Grenache wines .

Brun is also a synonym for the red grape variety Téoulier Noir grown in Provence .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The tip of the shoot is slightly flattened. It is greenish and hairy only cobwebs. The young leaves, which are also only hairy cobwebs, are shiny.
  • The dark green, slightly bluish-looking leaves are thick, five-lobed and deeply cupped. The stalk bay is closed like a lyre. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set medium-wide in comparison to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and coarse, especially in the area of the stalk bay. In autumn the leaves turn almost completely red.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium-sized and has dense berries. The round, only slightly oval berries are medium-sized and blue-black in color. The berries are not very juicy.

The late growing grape variety ripens approx. 25 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late within the group of red grape varieties. Brun Argenté is very sensitive to the fungal diseases downy mildew of the grapevine and gray mold rot .
