Fodom or Buchstein is a Dolomite , which in the Northeast by the Falzaregopass and west by the Pordoijoch is limited. Fodom is the Ladin name for the area that corresponds to the municipalities Livinallongo del Col di Lana (German Buchenstein , Ladin Fodom ) and Colle Santa Lucia (Ladin Col , German also Verseil ). The economically most important suburb is Arabba ( Rèba in Ladin ). In the Baedeker of 1906, Buchenstein was given the Italian name Pieve di Livinallongo , today a suburb of Livinallongo ( La Plié de Fodom in Ladin ).

Buchenstein or Fodom with Colle Santa Lucia is one of the five Dolomite valleys in Ladinia next to Val Badia , Val Gardena , Val di Fassa and Ampezzo .

To the south of the Falzarego Pass is Andraz Castle (German Castle Buchenstein , Ladin Ciastel d'Andrac , Italian Castello Buchenstein ).

Until World War I , Buchenstein was part of Tyrol , Austria . It was evacuated from Austria at the beginning of the war. Today Livinallongo is part of the Belluno Province . If, however, the wish of the valley residents expressed in a referendum on October 28, 2007, the communities Livinallongo and Colle Santa Lucia should be re-incorporated into South Tyrol in the near future .

In the course of the Italianization at the time of Italian fascism , the German toponym "Buchenstein" was banned and only in 2013 the official name of the upper Cordevoletal was reintroduced until 1918 .
