Buchwald was mentioned in 1538 as "im Puchwalde". The manorial rule over the place was divided between the manors Netzschkau and Thürnhof . The Buchwald Vorwerk was mentioned in 1583. In 1875 it was named "Waldhaus". In the 18th century, three gold washes were operated in the Göltzsch valley near Buchwald.

Until 1856, Buchwald belonged to the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Plauen . In 1856 the place was affiliated with the Treuen court office and in 1875 with the Auerbach administration . Around 1875 a distinction was made between Ober- and Unterbuchwald.

As a result of the first district reform in the GDR , the Buchwald community became part of the Plauen district in 1950 , but was incorporated into the Reichenbach district in the Chemnitz district (renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ) as a result of the second district reform in the GDR in 1952 . On April 1, 1974, Buchwald was incorporated into Limbach. As a district of Limbach, Buchwald belonged to the Saxon district of Reichenbach from 1990 and to the Vogtland district since 1996.
