Johann "Buffy" Ettmayer (born July 23, 1946 in Vienna ), also known as Hans Ettmayer for short , is a former Austrian football player .

Career

Ettmayer began his career in 1963 at FK Austria Wien , where he scored a goal in seven national league games before moving to Tyrol in 1966 to join FC Wacker Innsbruck . At Innsbruck he became a crowd favorite because of his wealth of tricks. In the 1970 cup final against Linz ASK in the Südstadt stadium , in front of 1,800 spectators, he scored the 1-0 winning goal in the 53rd minute and thus secured the first title win in the club's history in this competition. In 1971 FC Wacker won the first championship in the club's history with Ettmayer.

For the following season he moved to VfB Stuttgart , where despite his heavy weight (85 kg at 1.72 m) he was feared because of his tough shots. For VfB he scored a total of 34 goals in 97 games. On January 26, 1974, Ettmayer scored the 10,000 Bundesliga goal in the game against Eintracht Frankfurt. Johann Ettmayer had a legendary dialogue with VfB Stuttgart's then coach Albert Sing . When this Ettmayer opened " Buffy, you don't play, you are too fat " he replied " I've always been like that. "Sing justified his decision with the remark" There are pictures of you, you were thinner ", to which Ettmayer countered" They were probably made with a cine camera. “VfB only qualified sixth for the UEFA Cup in 1973 , otherwise they were mediocre. After VfB's first relegation from the Bundesliga in 1975, the player and the club parted ways.

From 1975 to 1977 he played for Hamburger SV . For the Hanseatic League, where he was not undisputed due to his weight problems, he played 27 Bundesliga games in which he scored four goals. At that time, HSV won the DFB Cup in 1976 under coach Kuno Klötzer , with Ettmayer only being used in the first two rounds of the competition. In 1977, when HSV won the European Cup in 1977 with a 2-0 win over RSC Anderlecht , he only came into play in the preliminary round against ÍB Keflavík , which Hamburg won 3-0.

After the end of the season he moved to the Swiss second division club FC Lugano for one season . He was the only full professional among the semi-amateurs, and so he was bored during the day, because training only took place in the evening. With the Ticino he was third, d. H. a place among the promotion ranks.

From 1978 to 1981 he played in the second Bundesliga group south for Freiburg FC . In 67 games he scored 14 goals for the German champions from 1907, who occupied midfield positions at that time and qualified 10th in 1981 for the single-track Second Bundesliga of the following season - the last highlight in the club's history; In 1982, the FC rose and said goodbye to professional football.

He completed his playing career from 1981 to 1983 at the amateur club SV Göppingen , for whom he was active at that time, with interruptions, as a player trainer and found a job as a planner for paperbacks in the magazine trade through the club sponsor.

In 1984 the now 37-year-old Austrian became the coach of the former regional league team SpVgg Rommelshausen . He was persuaded to do this by a good friend, Horst Reit, a patron of the association. Until he finally stopped playing football in 1986, he still enjoyed playing as a player every now and then.

Ettmayer played 30 games for the Austrian national team between September 22, 1968 and November 19, 1975. In the national team, he could not score a goal. From October 1970 to November 1971 he was, like his national team colleague Johann Schmidradner , active as a player in all six qualifying matches in Group 6 for the 1972 European Football Championship against Italy, Sweden and Ireland. Coach Leopold Šťastný also brought in Johann Eigenstiller , Norbert Hof , Peter Pumm and Gerhard Sturmberger in five European Championship qualifiers each.

Johann Ettmayer lives in Notzingen ( Baden-Württemberg ) and even today still occasionally appears at celebrity kicks. Ettmayer was not only known for his tricky game, his dry Viennese humor makes him a popular guest on talk shows time and again .
