The Max Rubner Institute ( MRI ), Federal Research Institute for Nutrition and Food is a higher federal authority of the Federal Republic of Germany within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). The main research focus is on consumer health protection in the nutrition sector. The MRI advises the BMEL in this area.
The institute is named after the physician and physiologist Max Rubner . Until January 1, 2008, the institute was called the Federal Research Center for Nutrition and Food (BfEL). President of the MRI is Pablo Steinberg.
The facility is headquartered in Karlsruhe . Further locations are Kiel , Detmold and Kulmbach . The previous locations in Münster and Hamburg were dissolved. In total, the institute employs around 200 scientists at the various locations.
The MRI is a member of the working group of departmental research institutions .
history
The predecessor of the MRI, the Federal Research Institute for Nutrition and Food, was created on January 1, 2004 by merging the following institutions:
- Federal Institute for Grain, Potato and Fat Research in Detmold and Münster
- Federal Institute for Dairy Research in Kiel
- Federal Research Institute for Nutrition in Karlsruhe
- Federal Institute for Meat Research in Kulmbach
- "Fish quality" branch of the Institute for Fishing Technology and Fish Quality of the Federal Research Center for Fisheries in Hamburg
task
According to the statutes of the MRI, the "Federal Research Institutes in the business area of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) [...] have the task of developing scientific decision-making aids for food, agriculture, forestry and consumer protection policy, and thus at the same time the scientific findings on these Expand areas for the benefit of the common good. In the context of these tasks, the federal research institutes are scientifically independent. "
Institute structure
Cross-product institutes / horizontal research:
- Institute for Physiology and Biochemistry of Nutrition, Karlsruhe
- Institute for Nutritional Behavior, Karlsruhe
- Institute for Food and Bioprocess Engineering, Karlsruhe
- Institute for Microbiology and Biotechnology, Kiel
- Institute for Child Nutrition, Karlsruhe
The aim of cross-production research is to develop recommendations for a healthy diet. To this end, the MRI examines food for its nutritional and health value and conducts research, for example, in the areas of food safety , bioprocess engineering and nutritional behavior.
Cross-production institutes / vertical research:
- Institute for Safety and Quality in Milk and Fish, Kiel
- Institute for Safety and Quality of Fruit and Vegetables, Karlsruhe
- Institute for the Safety and Quality of Meat, Kulmbach
- Institute for Safety and Quality of Grain, Detmold
The vertical research institutes of the MRI consider the entire food chain of a food category from harvest or production to the consumer. This involves the aspects of food safety and quality as well as the sustainability of food production.
The National Reference Center for Authentic Food (NRZ-Authent) and the National Breastfeeding Commission (NSK) are located at the Max Rubner Institute .
Among other things, the federal food key is issued, which contains a nutritional table for 15,000 foods (as of 2015).
criticism
The first President of the MRI, Gerhard Rechkemmer , was also a volunteer in the management team of the International Life Science Institute (ILSI). The ILSI is largely financed by industrial and food groups such as Coca-Cola , Mars , McDonald’s or Monsanto . The incumbent president, Pablo Steinberg, was also involved in several ILSI projects.
